Arts At The Old Fire Station
__NOTOC__ Arts at the Old Fire Station (AOFS) is a charity operating an arts centre, comprising a theatre, gallery, and cafe, in George Street, Oxford, England. History The charity was formed in an old corn exchange and fire station complex by the Oxford Area Arts Council in 1973. Many theatrical performances have taken place in the venue which for much of its early life was known as the "Old Fire Station Theatre". The homelessness charity, Crisis Skylight Oxford, has shared the space, co-located with Arts at the Old Fire Station which manages the venue, since 2011. George Street is a street in central Oxford, England. It is a shopping street running east–west. Overview Its eastern end meets Broad Street, Oxford, Broad Street at a crossroads with Cornmarket Street to the south and Magdalen Street to the north. Its western end meets Hythe Bridge Street at a crossroads with Worcester Street. The New Theatre Oxford, Oxford's main commercial theatre, is on the north side of the street. The Corn Exchange and Fire Station is a commercial complex in George Street in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. The structure is now occupied by an arts charity, Arts at the Old Fire Station, and a homelessness charity, Crisis Skylight Oxford. History St Aldate's Corn Exchange For much of the 19th century, corn merchants in Oxford conducted their trade in the open air in Cornmarket Street. In the early 1860s, a group of local businessmen decided to form a private company, known as the "Oxford Corn Exchange Company", to finance and commission a purpose-built corn exchange for the city. The site they chose was on the east side of St Aldate's. The St Aldate's building was designed by the city surveyor, Samuel Lipscomb Seckham, in the Grecian and mixed style and was completed in April 1863. Crisis (charity)
Crisis is the United Kingdom, UK national charity for people experiencing homelessness. The charity offers year-round education, employment, housing and well-being services from centres in East London, Newcastle, Oxford, Edinburgh, South Wales, Croydon, Brent and Merseyside, called Crisis Skylight Centres. As well as year-round services the charity runs Crisis at Christmas, which since 1972 has been offering food, warmth, companionship and support services to homeless people over the Christmas period. In 2016 almost 4,600 homeless people visited Crisis at Christmas. Since its inception Crisis has been a campaigning organisation, lobbying government for political change that prevents and mitigates homelessness based on research commissioned and undertaken by the organisation. New Theatre, Oxford
New Theatre Oxford (formerly the Apollo Theatre Oxford and the Apollo, from 1977–2003) is the main commercial theatre in Oxford, England. It has a capacity of 1,785 people; is on George Street, in the centre of the city; and puts on a wide variety of shows, including musical theatre, stand-up comedy, and concerts. The first "New Theatre" on this site opened in 1836 and presented music hall entertainment. This was replaced in 1886 by new premises, which were the home of Oxford University Dramatic Society. The theatre was damaged by fire in 1892 and enlarged in 1908, from which time it was continuously under the management of the Dorrill family until 1972. Michael Pilch Studio
The Michael Pilch Studio is a theatre in Oxford, England. It opened in 1997, has a capacity of 50–90 people depending on the configuration, and is located on Jowett Walk in central Oxford, England. The theatre was built as part of a phased development of buildings by Balliol College, mainly for student accommodation, on Jowett Walk during 1996–2004 (Phase 1 completed September 1996, Phase 2 completed July 2004), undertaken by MJP Architects. As a "black box" studio, the theatre is suitable for in-the-round staging and other non-standard layouts. It run by Balliol College Drama Society and is owned by Balliol College. The theatre is named after Michael Pilch (1927–2021), who was the benefactor who enabled the theatre to be built. The theatre stages a variety of productions, including Shakespeare.
