Artiestenhof
Artiestenhof is a hofje in the Trompstraat in the Dutch city of The Hague. It is a sidestreet branching off from the Piet Hein street. Around 1850, the older part of the Trompstraat had five courtyards and many businesses. The street was christened in 1872 by Sophie of the Netherlands, who was the owner of the land. The Trompstraat was extended around 1875 with higher-end properties. The painters hofjes in the older part of the street and over the years was the residence of numerous notable artists, include Henk Bremmer who lived there from 1902 until his death in 1956. In the middle of the courtyard is a large communal garden, which before World War II was divided so that all houses had their own piece of garden. Henk Bremmer
Hendricus Peter (Henk) Bremmer (17 May 1871, Leiden – 10 January 1956, The Hague) was a Dutch painter, art critic, art teacher, collector and art dealer. He was the father of the painter Rudolph Bremmer (1900–1993). Bremmer trained as a painter and artist, working in journalism from 1893–1895 and began teaching art in 1896. In the 1906-1907 season, Helene Kröller-Müller, then one of the richest women in the Netherlands, was his pupil and she soon began collecting art. Bremmer advised her to put together a collection, later forming the basis of the Kröller-Müller Museum. He also advised Hugo Tutein Nolthenius who kept of bust of him in his collection. Theo Bitter
Theodorus (Theo) Bitter (16 December 1916 – 13 February 1994 in The Hague) was a Dutch graphic artist, painter and draftsman. He also made monumental art, designed textiles, and illustrated books. Bitter was educated at the Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague. From 1946 to 1960, he taught at the same academy. He worked in The Hague, Oslo, and Lecce. Hofje
A (diminutive of 'hof', 'court') is a Dutch word for a courtyard with almshouses around it. have existed since the Middle Ages. A provided housing for elderly people (mostly women). They were privately funded, and served as a form of social security. In the Netherlands there are still a number of in use. are usually built in a U-shape with a yard or garden in the middle, and a gate as entrance. The shape of was most likely inspired by the (older) ''Begijnenhofjes''—groups of small houses inhabited exclusively by religious women. Princess Sophie of the Netherlands (Wilhelmine Marie Sophie Louise; 8 April 1824 – 23 March 1897) was the only daughter and last surviving child of King William II of the Netherlands and of his wife Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna of Russia. Nico Of Bohemia
Christa Päffgen (; 16 October 1938 – 18 July 1988), known by her stage name Nico, was a German singer, songwriter, actress, and model. Nico had roles in several films, including Federico Fellini's ''La Dolce Vita'' (1960) and Andy Warhol's ''Chelsea Girls'' (1966). At the insistence of Warhol, she sang lead on three songs of the Velvet Underground's debut album ''The Velvet Underground & Nico'' (1967). At the same time, she started a solo career and released '' Chelsea Girl'' (1967). Her friend Jim Morrison suggested that she start writing her own material. She then composed songs on a harmonium, not traditionally a rock instrument.
