Arthur Wellesley Vowell
Arthur Wellesley Vowell (September 17, 1841 – September 26, 1918) was an Ireland, Irish-born civil servant and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Kootenay (provincial electoral district), Kootenay in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1875 to 1876. He was born in County Tipperary, the son of Richard Prendergast Vowell, was educated there and served in the Irish militia from 1858 to 1860. In 1862, he came to British Columbia, travelling to Cariboo Regional District, Cariboo, where he tried his hand at mining to little avail. Vowell then moved to Victoria, British Columbia, Victoria, staying there until 1866 and subsequently moving to Big Bend, British Columbia, Big Bend. He was named chief constable there, serving in that post until 1872, when he was named Gold Commissioner, gold commissioner and stipendiary magistrate for the Kootenay district. Omineca Country
The Omineca Country, also called the Omineca District or the Omineca, is a historical geographic region of the Northern Interior of British Columbia, roughly defined by the basin of the Omineca River but including areas to the south which allowed access to the region during the Omineca Gold Rush of the 1860s. The term Omineca District also refers to the Omineca Mining District which referred to the same area but was a government administrative division. Today the name loosely refers to the region northwest of Prince George and north of Hwy 16 (the Yellowhead Highway) and occurs in the names of such entities as electoral districts, e.g. Prince George-Omineca. Peter O'Reilly (civil Servant)
Peter O'Reilly (27 March 1827 – 3 September 1905) was a prominent settler and official in colonial British Columbia who held a variety of positions, most notably as the head of a commission struck to revise and allocate Indian reserves throughout the province. Biography Peter O'Reilly was born in Ireland in 1827 and immigrated to Canada in 1859. Peter married Caroline Agnes Trutch (sister to John and Sir Joseph W. Trutch) in 1863 and moved into Point Ellice House in December 1867. The couple had four children: Francis "Frank" Joseph O'Reilly, Charlotte Kathleen O'Reilly, Mary Augusta O'Reilly, and Arthur John "Jack" O'Reilly. A carriage accident in 1885 left him immobile for several months. The injuries sustained during this accident would cause him to walk with a cane for the remainder of his life. Cassiar, British Columbia
Cassiar is a ghost town in British Columbia, Canada. It was a small company-owned asbestos mining town located in the Cassiar Mountains of Northern British Columbia north of Dease Lake. History The discovery of asbestos in the area in 1950 led to the founding of the Cassiar Asbestos Company in the following year. The town was established in 1952, the same year the mining operation began. By the 1970s, Cassiar had a population of 1,500 and had two schools, two churches, a small hospital, theatre, swimming pool, recreation centre and a hockey rink. By the early 1990s, diminished demand for asbestos and expensive complications faced after converting from an open-pit mine to an underground mine made the continued operation of the mine unprofitable. In 1992, Cassiar Asbestos decided to close the mine and liquidate its assets, including the town of Cassiar itself. Stipendiary magistrates were magistrates that were paid for their work (they received a stipend). They existed in the judiciaries of the United Kingdom and those of several former British territories, where they sat in the lowest-level criminal courts.
