Arthur Ware
Arthur Wellington Ware CMG (1861 – 29 January 1927) was a brewer and Mayor of Adelaide from 1898 to 1901 and a publican in both South Australia and Queensland. History Ware was born in Kooringa, the eldest son of Fanny (née Crawford) (1829 – 7 April 1898) and Charles James Ware (ca.1824 – 19 December 1891), who ran the Burra Hotel. He came to Adelaide with his parents in 1868, when they took over the Exchange Hotel, then owned by Sir Henry Ayers. He was educated at John L. Young's Adelaide Educational Institution and at Whinham College. After leaving school he was apprenticed to the locomotive department o£ the South Australian Railways, but left the service to work in Harrold Brothers' hardware store, where he met with a serious accident, and was forced to resign. Royal Hotel, Maryborough
Royal Hotel is a heritage-listed hotel on the corner of Kent Street and Bazaar Street, Maryborough, Fraser Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Eaton & Bates and built from 1892 to 1930s. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The Royal Hotel in Maryborough is a substantial rendered brick building, constructed in 1902 to designs of Messrs Eaton and Bates, architects of Rockhampton. The present hotel was built for Richard Hyne, a local pioneer who developed many local manufacturing and community initiatives. The original township of Maryborough was situated, not in its current place, but on the north of the Mary River, after wharves were established in 1847–1848, to provide transport for wool from sheep stations on the Burnett River. Municipal Tramways Trust
The Municipal Tramways Trust (MTT) was established by the Government of South Australia in December 1906 to purchase all of the horse-drawn tramways in Adelaide, Australia. The Trust subsequently also ran petrol and diesel buses and electric trolleybuses. It ceased to exist on 8 December 1975, when its functions were transferred to the State Transport Authority (South Australia), State Transport Authority, which also operated Adelaide's suburban train services. Military Cross
The Military Cross (MC) is the third-level (second-level pre-1993) military decoration awarded to officers and (since 1993) other ranks of the British Armed Forces, and formerly awarded to officers of other Commonwealth countries. The MC is granted in recognition of "an act or acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy on land" to all members of the British Armed Forces of any rank. In 1979, the Queen approved a proposal that a number of awards, including the Military Cross, could be recommended posthumously. Cadell, South Australia
Cadell is a town and locality situated near the north western edge of South Australia's Riverland on the inside of the large southward bend in the Murray River. It is named after Captain Francis Cadell, a pioneer of steam-powered navigation on the Murray River. The town of Cadell was surveyed in 1919 and named in 1920. It is slightly upstream of the earlier failed village settlement of New Era, however what is now the Cadell Irrigation Area is the same as was previously the New Era irrigation area. Land Use Cadell is a quiet rural township in the middle of a citrus and wine grape growing area. Most of the major services (medical, pharmacy, shopping, police, mechanical, etc.) are provided at nearby Waikerie. Limited services are also available at Morgan. Frederick Estcourt Bucknall
Frederick Estcourt Bucknall (6 July 1835 – 4 June 1896) was an English-born publican, brewer and politician in the early days of the colony of South Australia. Life Bucknall was a member of the Estcourts of Estcourt, an influential old family, in the counties of Gloucester and Wiltshire, but born in London, where his father, William Bucknall of Crutched Friars, was Commodore of the Royal Thames Yacht Club. Shortly after he arrived in South Australia around 1860 via Melbourne, the original Torrens Dam was nearly completed, and he built a fleet of fine pleasure craft which he placed on the lake for hire, but the dam failed and was washed away, putting paid to his enterprise. He built a boatshed on the Port River to the south-east of where the Jervois Street bridge was later built, and created a great deal of interest in sculling on the Port River. Hindmarsh Brewery
The Hindmarsh Brewery was a brewery founded 1844 in Hindmarsh, in the then colony of South Australia, by E. J. F. "Fred" Crawford. Crawford lost possession of the business in 1859, then re-established it on a different site before becoming bankrupt. It was then taken over by Henry Haussen and George Catchlove, and was successfully operated by them and their successors until 1927. Adelaide Racing Club was a horse racing club which had its origins around 1870 but founded in 1879 in competition with the South Australian Jockey Club. The A.R.C. held their race meetings on the "Old Adelaide Racecourse" (later known as Victoria Park) which they rented from the Adelaide City Council, while the S.A.J.C. owned Morphettville Racecourse freehold. Tattersalls Club, Adelaide
The first Tattersall's Club in Adelaide was founded in 1879 and folded in 1886. It was revived as the South Australian Tattersalls Club in 1888 and prospered as a gentlemen's club, whose membership was chiefly composed of men who enjoyed gambling on horse races. History The South Australian Tattersalls Club had its origin in a Tattersall's Club founded with 55 members on 27 May 1879, with similar rules and objectives to the Sydney and Melbourne Tattersalls Clubs. The meeting was held at the instigation of William Blackler at his Globe Hotel on Rundle Street, and several rooms in the hotel were set aside for the club's activities, principally gambling, no doubt to the benefit of bookmakers. Blackler then sold the publican's licence to fellow horse breeder J. H. Aldridge.
