Arthur W. Sterry
Arthur William Sterry (1883–1944) was an Australian filmmaker, actor and theatrical entrepreneur. He was born in Collingwood, Victoria and his family moved to Wagga Wagga when he was young. At the age of 18 Sterry moved to Melbourne. He went to work for J. C. Williamson Ltd for a time and ended up establishing his own drama company, Arthur W Sterry's Dramatic Company. He later went to work for the theatrical entrepreneur Philip Lytton, performing in a number of shows including ''The Waybacks (play), The Waybacks''. When Sterry left Lytton's company, he was given the stage and film rights to the play ''The Man They Could Not Hang'', based on the life story of John Babbacombe Lee, including Lytton's The Life Story of John Lee, or The Man They Could Not Hang (1912 film), 1912 version of the story. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day. AusStage: The Australian Live Performance Database is an online database which records information about live performances in Australia, providing records of productions from the first recorded performance in Australia (1789, by convicts) up until the present day. ''The Man They Could Not Hang'' is a 1934 Australian film directed by Raymond Longford about the life of John Babbacombe Lee, whose story had been filmed previously in 1912 and 1921. Synopsis In Devonshire, John Lee works for wealthy spinster Emma Keys. On the night he is engaged to be married, Keys is murdered and Lee is arrested on circumstantial evidence and is convicted of murder. He is condemned to death but when the authorities try to execute him the trap doors will not open. They fail a second time and his sentence is commuted to life imprisonment. Collingwood is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 3km north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Yarra local government area. ''The Life Story of John Lee, or the Man They Could Not Hang'' is a 1921 Australian silent film based on the true life story of John Babbacombe Lee. It is a remake of a 1912 film with some extra scenes of Lee's childhood. Unlike many silent Australian films, a copy of the movie exists. Plot John Lee grows up in England and is falsely accused of the murder of Emma Keye at Babbacombe. Characters include his parents; Miss Key's employer, Ned Saw; Eliza Harris and Jane, servants of Miss Keye; Kate Farmer, Lee's sweetheart. He is sentenced to be executed but the executions fail three times. Eventually, Lee is set free and is reunited with his mother and sweetheart at home. Production Sterry and Haldane enjoyed enormous success with the 1912 version of this story, so they decided to remake it.
