Arthur Marshall (Mississippi Politician)
Arthur Leroy Marshall (January 19, 1862-January 29, 1946) was a plantation owner and state legislator in Mississippi. He represented Sunflower County in the Mississippi State Senate from 1924 to 1926. He helped establish Delta State Teachers College in Cleveland, Mississippi. Biography Marshall was born January 19, 1862 near Ruleville Sunflower County, Mississippi to Berry Stowers Marshall and Louisa Georgia Marshall ( McKinsey). He went to McNutt, Mississippi high school and then studied engineering and law. He was made a special police officer designated to deal with a group of outlaws in the Mississippi Delta. His political career started as a delegate to the San Francisco Democratic National Convention in 1920 and he was made a Presidential elector in the 1924 United States presidential election. Sunflower County
Sunflower County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,971. Its largest city and county seat is Indianola. Sunflower County comprises the Indianola, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Cleveland-Indianola, MS Combined Statistical Area. It is located in the Mississippi Delta region. Mississippi State Penitentiary (Parchman Farm) is located in Sunflower County. History Sunflower County was created in 1844. The land mass encompassed most of Sunflower and Leflore Counties as we know them today. The first seat of government was Clayton, located near Fort Pemberton. Later the county seat was moved to McNutt, also in present-day Leflore County. Cumberland County, Virginia
Cumberland County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,675. Its county seat is Cumberland. History Cumberland County was established in 1749 from Goochland County. The county is named for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, third son of King George II of Great Britain. Cumberland County was also home to the Fleming family, which included Judge John Fleming and his son Judge William Fleming. From 1749 until 1777, when the eastern portion was detached to form Powhatan County, Mosby Tavern served as the county courthouse. The tavern subsequently became known as "Old Cumberland Courthouse". Delta State Teachers College
Delta State University (DSU) is a public university in Cleveland, Mississippi, a city in the Mississippi Delta. History The school was established in 1924 by the State of Mississippi, using the facilities of the former Bolivar County Agricultural High School, which consisted of three buildings in Cleveland. On February 19, 1924, Senators William B. Roberts and Arthur Marshall cosponsored Senate Bill No. 263, which established Delta State Teachers College, which Mississippi Governor Henry L. Whitfield signed on April 9, 1924; the bill had been sponsored in the Mississippi House of Representatives by Nellie Nugent Somerville, the first woman to serve in the Mississippi state legislature. The three buildings were Hill Hall, an administration and classroom building, Hardee Hall, a men's dormitory, and Taylor Hall, a women's dormitory.
