Arthur Lewis Hall
Arthur Lewis Hall FRS (10 January 1872 – 13 August 1955) was a British geologist, who worked in South Africa for most of his career. He was awarded the Murchison Medal of the Geological Society of London in 1930 for his work on the Bushveld Igneous Complex, and elected to the Royal Society in 1935. Early life and education Hall was born in Birmingham, to William Hall and Mary Ann (née Smith). At an early age he moved to Germany. He went to school in Freiburg, Bonn, Schwehn, Westphalia and finally to the Real Gymnasium, Kassel. At the age of 19 he won a scholarship to study at University College, Bristol. In 1896, Hall went to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and graduated with first class honours in geology in 1899. That summer he went to Wales to learn geological surveying with Philip Lake, a physical geographer who was later a lecturer in Cambridge. Owen Thomas Jones
Owen Thomas Jones, FRS FGS (16 April 1878 – 5 May 1967) was a Welsh geologist. Education He was born in Beulah, near Newcastle Emlyn, Cardiganshire, the only son of David Jones and Margaret Thomas. He attended the local village school in Trewen before going to Pencader Grammar School in 1893. In 1896 he went up to University College, Aberystwyth, to study physics, graduating in 1900. He then went to Trinity College, Cambridge, and was awarded a B.A. degree in Natural Sciences (geology) in 1902. Career In 1903 he joined the British Geological Survey, working near his home in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. In 1910 he was appointed the first professor of geology in Aberystwyth. In 1913 he became professor of geology at the University of Manchester, and then, in 1930, Woodwardian Professor of Geology at the University of Cambridge (until 1943). Arthur William Rogers
Arthur William Rogers (5 June 1872 in Bishops Hull near Taunton, Somerset – 23 June 1946 in Mowbray, Cape Town, Cape Province) was a British and South African geologist. He was Director of the Geological Survey of South Africa. Career Rogers studied at the University of Cambridge. From 1895 he was in South Africa, first in 1896–1902 as Assistant Geologist, from 1902–1911 as Geologist, and from 1911–1916 as Assistant Director of the Cape of Good Hope Geological Commission. In 1916 in Pretoria he became Director of the Geological Survey of South Africa, in which capacity he remained until his retirement in 1932. Frederick Eugene Wright
Frederick Eugene Wright (October 16, 1877 – August 25, 1953) was an American optical scientist and geophysicist. He was the second president of the Optical Society of America from 1918-1919. Biography He was born in Marquette, Michigan, and his father was a state geologist. In 1895 his mother took Frederick and his two brothers to Germany where he would complete his education. He was awarded his Ph.D. ''summa cum laude'' from the University of Heidelberg. After returning to the United States, he taught at the ''Michigan College of Mines'' and became the Assistant State Geologist. He moved to Washington D.C. in 1904, joining the United States Geological Survey. He then spent some time in exploration of Alaska. Charles Palache (July 18, 1869 – December 5, 1954) was an American mineralogist and crystallographer. In his time, he was one of the most important mineralogists in the United States. Background Charles Palache came from the Pallache family of Sephardic Jews. His grandfather, John Palache, had a plantation in Jamaica. His father, James Palache, was born in New York and moved to San Francisco as a merchant. His mother was Helen Whitney. Reginald Daly
Reginald Aldworth Daly (May 19, 1871 – September 19, 1957) was a Canadian geologist. He is best known for being one of the first proponents of the giant-impact hypothesis of the formation of the Moon. Biography Reginald Daly was educated at the University of Toronto, where geologist A.P. Coleman persuaded him away from teaching mathematics and into Earth Sciences. He obtained his PhD at Harvard, and did postgraduate work in Germany and France. After working as a field geologist for the International Boundary Commission, he was a professor, and headed the Department of Geology at Harvard University from 1912 until 1942. Gustaaf Adolf Frederik Molengraaff
Gustaaf Adolf Frederik Molengraaff (27 February 1860 – 26 March 1942) was a Dutch geologist, biologist and explorer. He became an authority on the geology of South Africa and the Dutch East Indies. Gustaaf Molengraaff studied mathematics and physics at Leiden University. From 1882 he studied at Utrecht University. As a student he made his first journey overseas when he joined the 1884–1885 expedition to the Dutch Antilles led by Willem Frederik Reinier Suringar and Karl Martin. Barberton Greenstone Belt
The Barberton Greenstone Belt is a geologic formation situated on the eastern edge of the Kaapvaal craton in South Africa. It is known for its gold mineralisation and for its komatiites, an unusual type of ultramafic volcanic rock named after the Komati River that flows through the belt.
