Arthur Jones (racewalker)
Arthur John Jones (5 October 1938 – 11 November 2023) was a British racewalker who ceompeted at the 1968 Summer Olympics. Biography Jones began his athletics career with Herne Hill Harriers and continued with them when he was in the Royal Air Force. After leaving the RAF he joined Brighton & Hove AC. In 1967 he was selected for Great Britain against France and the United States in Paris and finished second behind Ron Wallwork in the 2 miles walk event at the 1967 AAA Championships. He became the British 2 miles walk champion after winning the British AAA Championships title at the 1968 AAA Championships. Herne Hill Harriers
The Herne Hill Harriers is an amateur athletics sports club based at Tooting Bec Athletics Track in Tooting Bec, London. The club caters to all levels and ages of track, field, road running and cross-country running and begins training athletes at age 11 and offers “Star Track” an opportunity for younger children to get involved at the end of July each year. History The club was founded in the Herne Hill district of London in 1889 and completed their first handicap event in 1890. Racewalking
Race walking, or racewalking, is a long-distance discipline within the sport of athletics. Although a foot race, it is different from running in that one foot must appear to be in contact with the ground at all times. Race judges carefully assess that this is maintained throughout the race. However, if there is an argument between referee, a replay video must be reviewed to judge accordingly. Typically held on either roads or running tracks, common distances range from up to 100 kilometres (62.1 mi). The current race walking contests at the Summer Olympics are the 20 kilometres race walk (men and women) and the marathon race walk mixed relay, the latter of which debuted at the 2024 Summer Olympics. The 50 kilometres race walk (men only) was discontinued after the 2020 Summer Olympics. The 1968 Summer Olympics (), officially known as the Games of the XIX Olympiad () and officially branded as Mexico 1968 (), were an international multi-sport event held from 12 to 27 October 1968, in Mexico City, Mexico. Ron Wallwork
Ronald Wallwork (born 26 May 1941) is a retired male race walker from England, who represented his home nation at two Commonwealth Games. Biography Wallwork finished second and third respectively behind Paul Nihill in the 7 and 2 mile walk events at the 1965 AAA Championships. He later became a double British 2 miles champion after winning the British AAA Championships titles at the 1966 AAA Championships and 1967 AAA Championships. Wallwork represented England and won a gold medal in the 20 miles walk, at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica. Four years later he competed in the 20 miles walk again at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland.
