Arthur Island
Arthur Island (russian: Остров Артура; ''Ostrov Artura'') is an island in Franz Josef Land, Russia. It belongs administratively to the Arkhangelsk Oblast of the Russian Federation. Geography Arthur Island lies in the Queen Victoria Sea north of Zemlya Georga, relatively far from any other island. Its area is and its maximum height . Arthur Island is practically completely glacierized. Only a small area (Mys Ledovoy Razvedky) in the northwestern shores of the island and another (Mys Nizkiy) in the southernmost point of the island are free of glacier ice. This island was named by Frederick George Jackson after his brother Arthur Jackson, in the Jackson-Harmsworth Polar Expedition.Frederick G. Queen Victoria Sea
The Queen Victoria Sea (russian: Море королевы Виктории, ''Morye Korolevy Viktorii'') is a body of water in the Arctic Ocean, stretching from northeast of Svalbard to northwest Franz Josef Land. It is obstructed by ice most of the year. This sea is named after Queen Victoria. Russian Arctic explorer Valentin Akkuratov claimed that a branch of the Gulf Stream reached as far north as the Queen Victoria Sea. Geography The Queen Victoria Sea is located at 81° north longitude and 38° east latitude. The Arctic Ocean farther north of the sea is frozen year-round. The sea stretches as far west as the Sjuøyane in Svalbard and as far east as Rudolf Island in the Franz Josef Archipelago. Arctic Ocean
The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and shallowest of the world's five major oceans. It spans an area of approximately and is known as the coldest of all the oceans. The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) recognizes it as an ocean, although some oceanographers call it the Arctic Mediterranean Sea. Franz Josef Land, Frantz Iosef Land, Franz Joseph Land or Francis Joseph's Land ( rus, Земля́ Фра́нца-Ио́сифа, r=Zemlya Frantsa-Iosifa, no, Fridtjof Nansen Land) is a Russian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. Arkhangelsk Oblast (russian: Арха́нгельская о́бласть, ''Arkhangelskaya oblast'') is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). Zemlya Georga, or Prince George Land (russian: Земля Георга; ''Zemlya Georga'', "George Land"), is the largest island in Franz Josef Land, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russian Arctic. Frederick George Jackson
Frederick George Jackson (6 March 1860 – 13 March 1938) was an English Arctic explorer remembered for his expedition to Franz Josef Land, when he located the missing Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen. Biography Early life Jackson was born the son of George Frederick and Mary Elizabeth Jackson at Alcester Lodge, Alcester, Warwickshire, England and educated at Denstone College in Staffordshire and Edinburgh University. Career His first voyage in Arctic waters was on a whaling cruise in 1886–1887, and in 1893 he made a sledge-journey of 3000 miles across the frozen tundra of Siberia lying between the Ob and the Pechora. His narrative of this journey was published under the title of ''The Great Frozen Land'' (1895).
