Arthur Herbert (musician)
Arthur Herbert (born May 28, 1907, Brooklyn, New York (state), New York) was an American jazz drummer. Early life Both of Herbert's parents were of Trinidadian heritage. He worked in a silver and gold Refining (metallurgy), refinery as a young man, playing local gigs in New York nightclubs and hotels in his spare time. He left industry in 1935 to join Eddie Williams (saxophonist), Eddie Williams's band, and soon after started his own band, the Rhythm Masters. In the 1930s and 1940s he worked as a sideman with musicians such as Pete Brown (jazz musician), Pete Brown, Coleman Hawkins, Hot Lips Page and Sidney Bechet. In the 1950s Herbert went into semi-retirement as a musician and started up his own pest extermination business. He played in various swing jazz revival ensembles, and toured with Lem Johnson in Poland in the 1960s. Arthur Herbert, 1st Earl Of Torrington
Arthur Herbert, 1st Earl of Torrington ( – 13 April 1716) was an English naval officer and politician. Dismissed by James II of England in 1688 for refusing to vote to repeal the Test Act, which prevented Catholics from holding public office in England, he brought the ''Invitation to William'' to William of Orange at The Hague, disguised as a simple sailor. As a reward he was made commander of William's invasion fleet which landed at Torbay, Devon on 5 November 1688, which initiated the Glorious Revolution. Early life Born the son of Sir Edward Herbert and Margaret Smith, daughter of Thomas Smith, Herbert joined the Royal Navy in 1663. General Sir Arthur James Herbert KCB (21 January 1820 – 24 November 1897) was a Welsh officer in the British Army who was Quartermaster-General to the Forces. Early life and education Herbert was born in Llansantffraed, Monmouthshire,''1871 England Census'' the second son of James A. Jones of Llanarth, Monmouthshire, and Lady Harriet Plunkett, daughter of Arthur Plunkett, 8th Earl of Fingall, a prominent Irish Roman Catholic peer. He was educated at Prior Park Roman Catholic College and Christ Church, Oxford, earning a B.A. in 1877 and M.A. in 1882. Along with other members of his family, he changed his surname to Herbert in 1848. Military career Herbert was commissioned into the 23rd Regiment of Foot of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1839. Sir Arthur James Herbert, (22 August 1855 – 31 August 1921) was a British diplomat who served as the first List of diplomats of the United Kingdom to Norway, British envoy to Norway.
