Arthur Driver
Arthur Robert Driver (25 November 1909 – 18 May 1981) was an Australian engineer, army officer and public servant. He was the Administrator of the Northern Territory between 1946 and 1951. Early life and education Driver was born on 25 November 1909 in Albany, Western Australia. In 1918 his family moved to Perth, where he was educated. His main secondary education was undertaken at Hale School, Perth, where he became head prefect. Outside of his studies, he was very active in sports, competing in the school cricket, football and athletics teams. He went on to study at the University of Western Australia. He continued to be a prominent sportsman, particularly in rowing and athletics. He graduated from UWA in 1930. Administrator Of The Northern Territory
The administrator of the Northern Territory is an official appointed by the governor-general of Australia to represent the Crown in right of the Northern Territory. They perform functions similar to those of a state governor. Strictly speaking, the appointment of an administrator is made by the governor-general acting on the advice of the Australian government, rather than the advice of the government of the Northern Territory. However, ministers have described the process as being based on "advice from the Australian and Northern Territory governments". Unlike an Australian state governor, the administrator is not the direct representative of the King in the Territory but is instead appointed by the King's federal representative in Australia, the governor-general, to administer the Territory in accordance with the Act. Frank Wise
Frank Joseph Scott Wise AO (30 May 1897 – 29 June 1986) was a Labor Party politician who was the 16th Premier of Western Australia. He took office on 31 July 1945 in the closing stages of the Second World War, following the resignation of his predecessor due to ill health. He lost the following election two years later to the Liberal Party after Labor had held office for fourteen years previously. Wise was a farmer for several years in Queensland before working in the Department of Agriculture in that state. He later moved to Western Australia as a technical adviser in the Western Australian Department of Agriculture and in 1928 was commissioned to report and advise on tropical agriculture in the Northern Territory and the North West of Western Australia. Aubrey Abbott
Charles Lydiard Aubrey Abbott (4 May 1886 – 30 April 1975) was an Australian politician and public servant. He served as administrator of the Northern Territory from 1937 to 1946, a period encompassing the bombing of Darwin and other Japanese air raids on the territory during World War II. Originally a grazier from New South Wales, he was a Country Party politician prior to his time in the Northern Territory and served as Minister for Home Territories in the Bruce–Page government from 1928 to 1929. Irene Greenwood
Irene Greenwood (9 December 1898 — 14 April 1992) was an Australian radio broadcaster and feminist and peace activist. Early life and education Greenwood was born in Albany, Western Australia on 9 December 1898. She was the oldest child of Henry Driver and Mary Ann Driver née Hicken. Greenwood attended Albany State School between 1905 and 1912 and Perth Modern School between 1913 and 1917. She then went on to study arts at the University of Western Australia. Later life and career Driver worked as a secretary at the Department of Agriculture between 1918 and 1920 where she met her husband, Albert Ernest Greenwood, an accountant. They married on 18 June 1920 at the Anglican Church of the Annunciation in Broome, Western Australia. ''The Barrier Miner'' was a daily broadsheet newspaper published in Broken Hill in far western New South Wales from 1888 to 1974. History First published on 28 February 1888, ''The Barrier Miner'' was published continuously until 25 November 1974. Copies are available on microfilm and online via Trove Digitised Newspapers. The paper was revived briefly in 2005; an index to births deaths and marriages has been prepared which also notes additional publication dates between 16 December 2005 and 31 July 2008. The paper closed down for a second time in 2008 with the managing director, Margaret McBride stating that "...due to commercial reasons the paper would no longer service Broken Hill and the region...". Stowaway
A stowaway or clandestine traveller is a person who secretly boards a vehicle, such as a ship, an aircraft, a train, cargo truck or bus. Sometimes, the purpose is to get from one place to another without paying for transportation. In other cases, the goal is to enter another country without first obtaining a travel visa or other permission. Stowaways differ from people smuggling in that the stowaway needs to avoid detection by the truck driver, ship crew, and others responsible for the safe and secure operation of the transportation service. Thousands of stowaways have travelled by sea or land over the last several centuries. A much smaller number of people have attempted to stowaway on aircraft.
