Gordon Dean (Australian Politician)
Arthur Gordon Dean (13 June 1942 – 27 July 2023) was an Australian politician, solicitor and magistrate. He was a Liberal Party of Australia member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1977 to 1983, representing the electorate of Herbert. Early life Dean was born in Mackay, Queensland, raised in the small town of Maroon and educated in Mount Isa and Townsville. In 1960, he began as an articled clerk for his grandfather's Townsville law firm of Dean Gillman & Thompson, was admitted as a solicitor in 1965, and became a partner of the firm the same year, remaining with them until his election to parliament. Dean also worked as a television newsreader for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Townsville from 1964 to 1967. Sir Arthur Dean, (25 May 1893 – 25 September 1970) was an Australian lawyer, noteworthy as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria and Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. Early life and education Dean was born in Merino, Victoria and educated at Scotch College, Melbourne. After school he won an exhibition to the University of Melbourne where he obtained an LL.B. and LL.M. He was later awarded honorary LL.D. degrees by the University of Melbourne and the University of Western Australia. Career Dean was appointed King's Counsel in March 1944 and became a Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1949 where he continued as a judge until 1965. Arthur Hobson Dean (October 16, 1898 – November 30, 1987) was a New York City lawyer and diplomat who was viewed as one of the leading corporate lawyers of his day, as well having served as a key advisor to numerous U.S. presidents. Dean was chairman and senior partner of Sullivan & Cromwell, where he worked closely with John Foster Dulles. He was the chief U.S. negotiator at Panmunjeom where he helped negotiate the Korean Armistice Agreement, which ended the Korean War, and also helped draft and negotiate the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in 1963. Dean was a member (and later served on the board of directors) of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Asia Society and served as a delegate to the United Nations. Arthur Paul Dean, Baron Dean of Harptree, PC (14 September 1924 – 1 April 2009) was a British Conservative Party politician. Early life and Second World War Paul Dean was born in Northwich, Cheshire, England, on 14 September 1924, and was educated at Ellesmere College and Exeter College, Oxford. He served with the Welsh Guards during the Second World War, being commissioned in that regiment on 28 January 1944, with the service number of 307877. Arthur Deane Nesbitt OBE, DFC, CdeG (16 November 1910 – 22 February 1978) was a Canadian businessman and a decorated pilot and Wing Commander in World War II. Early life Nesbitt was born in Westmount, Quebec, the son of the very successful stockbroker and co-founder of Nesbitt, Thomson and Company, Arthur James Nesbitt. Trained as an electrical engineer, after his older brother Aird decided to take over permanent management of the family-owned Ogilvy department store in Montreal, Nesbitt joined the family's securities business.
