''Artforum'' is an international monthly magazine specializing in contemporary art. The magazine is distinguished from other magazines by its unique 10½ × 10½ inch square format, with each cover often devoted to the work of an artist. Notably, the ''Artforum'' logo is a bold and condensed iteration of the Akzidenz-Grotesk font, a feat for an American publication to have considering how challenging it was to obtain fonts favored by the Swiss school via local European foundries in the 1960s. David Velasco
David Velasco (born October 23, 1978) is an American writer and editor. He was the editor-in-chief of the art magazine ''Artforum'' from 2017 to 2023. He is the editor of ''Modern Dance'', a 2017 series of books on contemporary choreographers published by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He has written texts on a number of artists, including Sarah Michelson, Adrian Piper, and David Wojnarowicz. In 2017, he helped photographer and activist Nan Goldin establish the activist group P.A.I.N., chronicled in Laura Poitras's Academy Award–nominated documentary ''All the Beauty and the Bloodshed'' (2022). Michelle Kuo
Michelle Kuo (born 1977 or 1978) is an American curator, writer, and art historian. Since 2018, Kuo has been a curator of painting and sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art. She was previously editor-in-chief of ''Artforum'' magazine starting in 2010. Education Kuo earned a BA from Stanford University, majoring in art history and political science. As a graduate student at Harvard University, she co-curated a show on the works of architect Le Corbusier at the university's Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts on the occasion of the Carpenter Center's 40th anniversary in 2004. From 2005 to 2007, Kuo was the Wyeth Predoctoral Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. John Coplans
John Rivers Coplans (24 June 1920 – 21 August 2003) was a British artist, art writer, curator, and museum director. A veteran of World War II and a photographer, he emigrated to the United States in 1960 and had many exhibitions in Europe and North America. He was on the founding editorial staff of Artforum from 1962 to 1971, and was Editor-in-Chief from 1972 to 1977. Ingrid Sischy
Ingrid Barbara Sischy (; March 2, 1952 – July 24, 2015) was a South African-born American writer and editor who specialized in covering art, photography, and fashion. She rose to prominence as the editor of ''Artforum'' from 1979 to 1988, and was editor-in-chief of Andy Warhol's ''Interview Magazine'' from 1989 to 2008. Until her death in 2015, she and her partner Sandra Brant edited the Italian, Spanish and German editions of '' Vanity Fair''. Tina Rivers Ryan
Tina Rivers Ryan is an American curator, researcher, author, editor, and art historian. Her expertise is in new media art, which includes digital art, and internet art. She was a curator at the Albright–Knox Art Gallery, now Buffalo AKG Art Museum, in Buffalo, New York, from 2017 to 2024. In 2024, Ryan was named the editor-in-chief of ''Artforum'' magazine. Jack Bankowsky
Jack Bankowsky was the Editor-in-Chief of Artforum throughout the 1990s (1992-2003) and the founding editor of Artforum's sister publication, Bookforum, where he was editor from 1996 to 1998. He is currently Editor-at-Large of Artforum and a freelance critic and curator. Minimal Art
Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is set out to expose the essence, essentials or identity of a subject through eliminating all non-essential forms, features or concepts. As a specific movement in the arts it is identified with developments in post–World War II Western Art, most strongly with American visual arts in the 1960s and early 1970s. Minimalism is often interpreted as a reaction to abstract expressionism and a bridge to postminimal art practices. Robert Smithson
Robert Smithson (January 2, 1938 – July 20, 1973) was an American artist known for sculpture and land art who often used drawing and photography in relation to the spatial arts. His work has been internationally exhibited in galleries and museums and is held in public collections. He was one of the founders of the land art movement whose best known work is the ''Spiral Jetty'' (1970). ''Bookforum'' is an American book review magazine devoted to books and the discussion of literature. After announcing that it would cease publication in December 2022, it reported its relaunch under the direction of ''The Nation'' magazine six months later. History Based in New York City, New York, the magazine was launched in 1994 as a literary supplement to '' Artforum''. Originally published biannually, it became a quarterly in 1998, and since 2005, ''Bookforum'' has published five times a year in February, April, June, September, and December.
