Arter (art Center)
Arter is a contemporary art museum in the Dolapdere district of Istanbul, Turkey. A subsidiary of the Vehbi Koç Foundation, Arter was opened in 2010 with the aim of providing a sustainable infrastructure for producing and exhibiting contemporary art. Following eight years of operation during which it contributed to the visibility of contemporary art with a programme featuring exhibitions, publications, talks, performances and workshops at its venue on İstiklal Avenue, Istiklal Street, Arter moved to its new home in the Dolapdere district of Istanbul in September 2019. At its new building, Arter continues expanding the range of its activities beyond exhibitions to performances and events across many disciplines. Arter presented 64 exhibitions and provided support for the production of over 210 artworks between May 2010 and September 2023. Vehbi Koç Foundation
The Vehbi Koç Foundation () is one of the biggest non-governmental charitable organizations in Turkey. It was established on January 17, 1969 by the Turkish entrepreneur and philanthropist Vehbi Koç (1901-1996). The foundation is active in the fields of education, healthcare and culture. The board of directors is currently chaired by Semahat Arsel, the eldest daughter of Vehbi Koç. Executive committee's president is Suna Koç, another daughter. Erdal Yıldırım is the managing director of the foundation. The headquarters of the foundation is located at Nakkaştepe in Kuzguncuk, Istanbul. Fatma Bucak
Fatma Bucak (born 1984) is an artist and photographer who lives and works in London and Istanbul. Biography She was born in Turkey, to a Kurdish family. She works in a variety of media, including photography, performance, sound, multimedia, and video installation, and focuses on themes of political identity, historical memory, and gender. In 2019, she was named one of the Royal Photographic Society's ‘Hundred Heroines’, recognizing the achievements of women in photography. Bucak has exhibited at Venice Biennale, the Jewish Museum New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto. Her work is held in the permanent collections of Fondazione Mario Merz, Arter, MAMbo, the Civic Gallery of Modena, and the Unicredit Art Collection. Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye
Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye (born 30 August 1938) is a Turkish- Danish ceramic artist. Siesbye designed ceramic wares for the ceramic companies Royal Copenhagen and Rosenthal AG. In 2009, Siesbye was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for her ceramic designs. Biography Siesbye was born in Istanbul on 30 August 1938. After studying sculpture at the Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts from 1956-1958, she left for Germany where she worked in ceramic factories in Höhr-Grenzhausen. She returned two years later to Istanbul to work in the Art Workshop of the Eczacibasi Ceramic Factories. In 1962, she left Istanbul for Copenhagen and worked for the ceramic company Royal Copenhagen as an artist. She opened her own workshop in 1969. Cevdet Erek
Cevdet Erek (born 1974) is a Turkish visual artist and musician living and working in Istanbul, Turkey. He is known for combining sound, rhythm and architecture to create installations, videos, objects and performances characterized by site specificity. Cevdet Erek was the recipient of the Nam Jun Paik Award in 2012 and represented Turkey at the 57th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia in 2017. Education Erek studied architecture at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts, while working at various architectural practices as well as acting as the drummer for the music band Nekropsi. AyÅŸe Erkmen
Ayşe Erkmen (born 1949, Istanbul) is a visual artist recognized as "one of the foremost Turkish artists." She is living and working in Berlin and in Istanbul. Influenced by specific sites, histories and geographies Ayşe Erkmen's works takes the social and physical environment that she is in. Erkmen does not invent new forms, but she transforms architectural and social conditions and contexts. Between 1998 and 1999 she worked as the Arnold Bode Professor at Kassel Art Academy, and between 2000 and 2015 she was a lecturer at Kunstakademie Münster. Canan Senol
Canan Senol (; née Canan Şahin; born 1970), also known by the mononym Canan, is a Turkish multidisciplinary visual artist and activist, of Kurdish ethnicity. Her artwork addresses gender stereotypes, sexuality, and politics. She utilizes a variety of mediums in her practice including craft and digital techniques. Iakovos "Jake" Chapman (born 1966) and Konstantinos "Dinos" Chapman (born 1962) are British visual artists, previously known as the Chapman Brothers. Their art explores deliberately shocking subject matters; for instance, in 2008, they produced a series of works that appropriated original watercolours by Adolf Hitler. Bilge Friedlaender
The bilge of a ship or boat is the part of the hull that would rest on the ground if the vessel were unsupported by water. The "turn of the bilge" is the transition from the bottom of a hull to the sides of a hull. Internally, the bilges (usually used in the plural in this context) is the lowest compartment on a ship or seaplane, on either side of the keel and (in a traditional wooden vessel) between the floors. The first known use of the word is from 1513. Bilge water The word is sometimes also used to describe the water that collects in this area. Water that does not drain off the side of the deck or through a hole in the hull, which it would typically do via a scupper, instead drains down into the ship into the bilge. Nil Yalter
Nil Yalter (born 1938) is a Turkish contemporary feminist artist. She attended Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey and currently lives and works in Paris. Her work, which is included in many collections and museums, includes not only drawings and photographs, but also videos and performance art. In fact she is the first Turkish female video artist. Early life Nil Yalter was born in 1938 in Cairo, Egypt where she lived until the age of four. She is Turkish and later in her life became also a French national. Şener Özmen (born 1971, Idil) is a Kurdish artist. Early life He graduated from the Department of Painting Education at the Faculty of Education at Çukurova University. Šejla Kamerić (born 1976) is a Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnian Visual arts, visual artist. Early life and education Šejla Kamerić was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
