Artaserse (Mysliveček)
''Artaserse'' is an opera in three acts by the Czech composer Josef Mysliveček, set to a popular libretto (or ''dramma per musica'') by Metastasio that was originally performed in 1730. It was customary to alter the Metastasian text considerably for operas in the 1770s, but this one mainly adheres to the original Metastasian text, albeit with the placement of some scenes re-arranged and some scenes omitted. All of Mysliveček's operas are of the serious type in Italian referred to as opera seria. Performance history The opera was first performed at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples on 13 August 1774, the birthday of queen Maria Carolina of Naples. Mysliveček received the commission on the strength of his opera '' Romolo ed Ersilia'', which was performed on the queen's birthday the year before. Antonia Bernasconi
Antonia Bernasconi (1741–1803) was a German operatic soprano, originally from the Holy Roman Empire. She appeared in opera houses in Vienna, Milan, Venice, Naples and London. Life Bernasconi was born in Stuttgart in 1741; her father, named Wagele. was a valet de chambre of the Prince of Württemberg; after Wagele's death his widow married Andrea Bernasconi, ''Kapellmeister'' of the court at Munich and composer. Antonia received early music lessons from her stepfather, and she sang in Munich and other German cities. ''Opera seria'' (; plural: ''opere serie''; usually called ''dramma per musica'' or ''melodramma serio'') is an Italian musical term which refers to the noble and "serious" style of Italian opera that predominated in Europe from the 1710s to about 1770. The term itself was rarely used at the time and only attained common usage once ''opera seria'' was becoming unfashionable and beginning to be viewed as something of a historical genre. The popular rival to ''opera seria'' was ''opera buffa,'' the 'comic' opera that took its cue from the improvisatory commedia dell'arte. Recitative (, also known by its Italian name recitativo () is a style of delivery (much used in operas, oratorios, and cantatas) in which a singer is allowed to adopt the rhythms and delivery of ordinary speech. Recitative does not repeat lines as formally composed songs do. It resembles sung ordinary speech more than a formal musical composition. Recitative can be distinguished on a continuum from more speech-like to more musically sung, with more sustained melodic lines. The mostly syllabic ''recitativo secco'' ("dry", accompanied only by Basso continuo, continuo, typically cello and harpsichord) is at one end of the spectrum, through ''recitativo accompagnato'' (using orchestra), the more melismatic arioso, and finally the full-blown aria or ensemble, where the pulse is entirely governed by the music. History Mozart composed the aria in October 1765 while staying at The Hague during the Mozart family grand tour, family's British-European tour when he was nine years old. Both of the Mozart children, Wolfgang and his sister Maria Anna Mozart, Nannerl, were quite ill at the time. It was slightly revised in January 1766, possibly for a performance for Princess Carolina of Orange-Nassau.
