Arrival Heights Laboratory
Arrival Heights Laboratory is a research station in the Antarctic Specially Protected Area of Arrival Heights in Antarctica, around 2 km from McMurdo Station. Its one of the facilities on Hut Point Peninsula along with Scott Base (NZ) and McMurdo Station (US). History Arrival Heights Laboratory is a green shipping container building located within area 122 of the Antarctic Specially Protected Area. The area is an electromagnetic quite zone. McMurdo Station is located nearby. Scientists from New Zealand came to area 122 in 1959. An Auroral Radar Station was established by New Zealand at Arrival Heights in 1959. 15 tonnes of radar and building materials were brought to the area in February 1960, and Arrival Heights Laboratory was completed in two days. Research Stations In Antarctica
Multiple governments have set up permanent research stations in Antarctica and these bases are widely distributed. Unlike the drifting ice stations set up in the Arctic, the current research stations of the Antarctic are constructed either on rocks or on ice that are (for practical purposes) fixed in place. Many of these stations are demographics of Antarctica, staffed throughout the year. Of the 56 signatories to the Antarctic Treaty System, Antarctic Treaty, a total of 55 countries (as of 2023) operate seasonal (summer) and year-round research stations on the continent. The number of people performing and supporting scientific research on the continent and nearby islands varies from approximately 4,800 during the summer to around 1,200 during the winter (June). The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research or NIWA (), is a Crown Research Institute of New Zealand. An aurora ( aurorae or auroras), also commonly known as the northern lights (aurora borealis) or southern lights (aurora australis), is a natural light display in Earth's sky, predominantly observed in high-latitude regions (around the Arctic and Antarctic). Auroras display dynamic patterns of radiant lights that appear as curtains, rays, spirals or dynamic flickers covering the entire sky. Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels are mainly built to handle anchors for oil rigs, tow them to location, and use them to secure the rigs in place. AHTS vessels sometimes also serve as Emergency Response and Rescue Vessels (ERRVs) and as supply transports. Many of these vessels are designed to meet the harsh conditions of the North Sea, and can undertake supply duties there between land bases and drilling sites.
