Arriaga, Chiapas
Arriaga Municipality is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas, in southern Mexico. It covers an area of and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the neighbouring state of Oaxaca, as well as by the Chiapas municipalities of Cintalapa, Jiquipilas, Villaflores and Tonalá. As of 2010, the municipality had a total population of 40,042, up from 34,032 in 2005. As of 2010, the city of Arriaga had a population of 24,447. Other than the city of Arriaga, the municipality had 464 localities, the largest of which (with 2010 populations in parentheses) were: Emiliano Zapata (3,353), classified as urban, and Azteca (La Punta) (1,829), La Gloria (1,801), La Línea (1,452), and Lázaro Cárdenas (1,172), classified as rural. The name of the city honours Ponciano Arriaga, the name given to it upon creation of the municipality on 28 May 1910. It was given city status on 1 December 1943. Tren Interoceánico (network)
The Interoceanic Train of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec () is a government-owned railway system in Mexico that has three lines. It seeks to become a global logistics network focused on the manufacture and movement of goods between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Ponciano Arriaga
José Ponciano Arriaga Mejía (1811–1865) was a lawyer and radical liberal politician from the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí. Biography Arriaga rose to prominence in the late 1840s and is particularly known for pushing for the equality of people through property rights. Arriaga proposed a law in which the government would confiscate lands from the local hacienda owners and redistribute it to the local Indian population. Later in his career, Arriaga proposed landowners who possessed more than 15 square leagues, had to begin cultivating their land or forfeit it. Arriaga further proposed that anyone who did not own at least 50 pesos worth of land would be exempt from most taxes. The focus for Arriaga on equality through property rights stems from his argument that "despite the fundamental laws of the land, a privileged caste would be able to establish an aristocracy of wealth and monopolize land and political power." Emiliano Zapata is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas, located approximately southeast of the state capital of Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Villaflores is a municipality in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, and the name of its largest settlement and seat of the municipal government.
