Arolsen
Bad Arolsen (, until 1997 Arolsen, being the German name for ''Spa'') is a small town in northern Hesse, Germany, in Waldeck-Frankenberg district. From 1655 until 1918 it served as the residence town of the Princes of Waldeck (state), Waldeck-Pyrmont and then until 1929 as the capital of the Free State of Waldeck-Pyrmont, Waldeck Free State. The International Tracing Service has its headquarters in Bad Arolsen. Geography Location Bad Arolsen is situated roughly 45 km west of Kassel. Waldeck (state)
The County of Waldeck (later the Principality of Waldeck and Principality of Waldeck and Pyrmont) was a state of the Holy Roman Empire and its successors from the late 12th century until 1929. In 1349 the county gained Imperial immediacy and in 1712 was raised to the rank of Imperial Prince, principality. After the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 it was a constituent state of its successors: the Confederation of the Rhine, the German Confederation, the North German Confederation, and the German Empire. After the abolition of the monarchy in 1918, the renamed Free State of Waldeck-Pyrmont became a component of the Weimar Republic until divided between Province of Hanover, Hannover and other Free State of Prussia, Prussian provinces in 1929. International Tracing Service
The Arolsen Archives – International Center on Nazi Persecution formerly the International Tracing Service (ITS), in German Internationaler Suchdienst, in French Service International de Recherches in Bad Arolsen, Germany, is an internationally governed centre for documentation, information and research on Nazi persecution, forced labour and the Holocaust in Nazi Germany and its occupied regions. The archive contains about 30 million documents from concentration camps, details of forced labour, and files on displaced persons. ITS preserves the original documents and clarifies the fate of those persecuted by the Nazis. The archives have been accessible to researchers since 2007. In May 2019 the Center uploaded around 13 million documents and made it available online to the public. The archives are currently being digitised and transcribed through the crowdsourcing platform Zooniverse. As of September 2022, approximately 46% of the archives have been transcribed. Twistetal is a municipality in Waldeck-Frankenberg in northwest Hesse, Germany, southwest of Bad Arolsen. Geography Location The community lies on the river Twiste, a tributary to the Diemel, itself a tributary to the Weser. Twistetal is only a short way downstream from, and southwest of, the Twistesee, a man-made lake. It is located about 6 kilometers southwest from Bad Arolsen. Diemelstadt is a small town in Waldeck-Frankenberg district in Hesse, Germany. Geography Location Diemelstadt lies in a small "bay" of Hesse that thrusts into, and is surrounded on three sides by, North Rhine-Westphalia. The River Diemel, the town's namesake, does not cross through the municipal area, forming only parts of the town limits, and at the same time parts of the boundary between Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. One river that does cross through the municipal area, however, is the Orpe, a north-flowing tributary to the Diemel that empties into the larger river at the northern town limits. Mengeringhausen is a village and a municipal district of Bad Arolsen in Waldeck-Frankenberg, in Hesse, Germany. Its population is estimated to be 3,800 people. Friedrich Anton Ulrich, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont (; 27 November 16761 January 1728) was the first reigning Prince of Waldeck (state), Waldeck and Pyrmont from 1712 to 1728.
