Arnold Haley
Arnold Haley (15 September 1942 – 28 March 2003) was an international motorcycle speedway rider from England. At retirement he had earned 33 international caps for the England national speedway team and 6 caps for Great Britain. Speedway career Haley rode in the top tier of British Speedway from 1965 to 1981, riding for various clubs. He spent fourteen seasons with Sheffield Tigers from 1965 to 1978. He was instrumental in helping Sheffield win the British League Knockout Cup during the 1974 British League season. In 1979, he signed for Belle Vue Aces but he struggled to find form before being loaned out to Workington Comets. His unhappy time at Belle Vue came to a quick end when he transferred to Exeter Falcons. Sheffield Tigers
The Sheffield Tigers (sponsored by Tru Plant) are a motorcycle speedway team based in Sheffield, England. They currently race in the British SGB Premiership, and their home meetings take place at Owlerton Stadium. They were founded in 1929 and were champions of Britain, in 2023. The Tigers traditionally hold their race nights on Thursdays between March and October. History Origins & 1930s In 1929 construction began on a 20-acre freehold site to build a new stadium in Owlerton. The Provincial Dirt Tracks (Sheffield) Co. Ltd under the chairmanship of Edgar W. Hart opened the purpose-built Owlerton Stadium on 30 March 1929. The team known simply as Sheffield at the time were inaugural members of the English Dirt Track League and Northern League the following season. 1974 British League Season
The 1974 British League season was the 40th season of the top tier of motorcycle speedway in the United Kingdom and the tenth season known as the British League. Summary The 1973 Champions Reading didn't compete as they no longer had a stadium, following the closure of Reading Stadium and Hull Vikings replaced them. The league was reduced to seventeen teams when the Coatbridge Tigers dropped down to Division Two. Overseas riders that rode in other leagues abroad were banned which meant that top Swedish riders such as Anders Michanek, Bernt Persson, Tommy Jansson and Christer Löfqvist didn't compete. The Exeter Falcons won their first title. They were headed by the legendary four time world champion Ivan Mauger and backed up well by Scott Autrey (8.32), Tony Lomas (7.29) and Kevin Holden (7.26). The British Newspaper Archive website provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library's Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. British League Knockout Cup
The British League Knockout Cup was a speedway Knockout Cup competition in the United Kingdom governed by the Speedway Control Board (SCB) in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA), that was staged between 1965 and 1994. The teams from the top division of league racing, the British League, took part. A similar competition was held for clubs in leagues that succeeded the British League, including the Elite League Knockout Cup and the Premier League Knockout Cup. Rules This competition was run on the knockout principle; teams drawn together race home and away matches, with the aggregate score deciding the result. In the event of the aggregate score being level, the teams again race home and away. Winners * The first leg of the final at Cradley was drawn, and the second leg at Oxford was cancelled due to bad weather.
