Armstrong Siddeley Mastiff
The Armstrong Siddeley Deerhound was a large aero engine developed by Armstrong Siddeley between 1935 and 1941. An increased capacity variant known as the Boarhound was never flown,Gunston 1989, p.18. and a related, much larger, design known as the Wolfhound existed on paper only. Development of these engines was interrupted in April 1941, when the company's factory was bombed, and on 3 October 1941 the project was cancelled by the Air Ministry. Design and development The Deerhound I was a triple-row, 21-cylinder, air-cooled radial engine design with the unusual feature of inline cylinder banks. Unlike earlier Armstrong Siddeley engines the Deerhound used overhead camshafts to operate its poppet valves, using one camshaft for each bank of three cylinders.Lumsden 2003, p.77. In a piston engine, the bore (or cylinder bore) is the diameter of each cylinder. Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust
The Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust is an organisation that was founded in 1981 to preserve the history of Rolls-Royce Limited, Rolls-Royce Holdings and all merged or acquired companies. Five volunteer led branches exist, three in England, one in Scotland and a North American branch. Branches Derby and Hucknall The collection is located within the Company campus at Sinfin. The site at Osmaston Road is now permanently closed. A separate site with a smaller engine collection details the history of the Rolls-Royce Flight Test Establishment at Hucknall. Mathis Vega 42
The Mathis Vega 42 was a 42-cylinder 6-bank in-line radial piston engine, designed and built in France, by '' Société Mathis Aviation'' in the late 1930s, with development continuing during and after WWII. Design and development Émile E. C. Mathis had begun designing and producing motor-cars from 1910. ''Société Mathis Aviation'', formed in 1937, began designing aircraft engines, initially with the large and complex Vega. The Vega (and the similar Vesta) had a 2-piece Aluminium-alloy crankcase, 7 Aluminium-alloy cylinder blocks, with one-piece Aluminium-alloy heads and steel cylinder liners. A 6-throw crankshaft ran in 7 plain bearings. Development continued after the war, culminating in the Vesta 42, which did not reach the hardware stage before Mathis closed its doors. Lycoming R-7755
The Lycoming XR-7755 was the largest piston aircraft engine ever built in the United States, with 36 cylinders totaling about 7,750 in3 (127 L) of displacement and a power output of 5,000 horsepower (3,700 kilowatts). It was originally intended to be used in the "European bomber" that eventually emerged as the Convair B-36. Only two examples were built before the project was terminated in 1946. Development Lycoming had not been successful in designing a high-power engine. They had started with an attempt to make a hyper engine that led to the 1,200 hp (890 kW) O-1230; by the time the engine was ready, however, new aircraft designs were all calling for more power. The Isotta Fraschini Zeta was an air cooled X engine with 24 cylinders developed by the Italian engineering company Isotta Fraschini in the 1940s. It was developed as an indigenous alternative to the imported Daimler-Benz DB 605 that was being built under licence as the Fiat RA.1050 R.C.58 Tifone. The engine was essentially two Gamma V12 engines on a single crankshaft, but proved troublesome to develop and never entered production. The Dobrynin VD-4K was a Soviet six-bank, 24-cylinder, turbo-compound, inline radial engine developed after the end of World War II. It was superseded by turboprop engines before it could be widely used. Development The VD-4K, originally designated as the M-253K, was a development of the post-war VD-3TK (M-251K) engine. Like Nazi Germany's experimental Junkers Jumo 222 multibank wartime engine, the VD-4K had six monobloc banks, each with four liquid-cooled cylinders. BMW 803
The BMW 803 was a German aircraft engine, an attempt by BMW to build a high-output aircraft engine by coupling two BMW 801 engines back-to-back, driving contra-rotating propellers. The result was a 28-cylinder, four-row radial engine, each comprising a multiple-bank in-line engine with two cylinders in each bank, which, due to cooling concerns, were liquid cooled. Design and development One problem with scaling up any piston engine design is that eventually a point is reached where the crankshaft becomes a major engineering challenge. The Armstrong Siddeley Hyena was a British aero engine developed by Armstrong Siddeley. Designed in the 1930s, it was an unusual experimental radial engine with inline cylinder banks. It was flown using an Armstrong Whitworth A.W.16 fighter aircraft as a test bed. Unresolved problems with cooling of the rear cylinders prevented the engine from going into production.
