Le Rozel () is a commune in the Manche department in Normandy in north-western France. Its INSEE number is 50442, and its postal code is 50340. Prehistory Neanderthals are thought to have been in the area, around 80,000 years ago, with evidence provided by 257 footprints fossilised in sandy mud alongside other archaeological material, excavated between 2012 and 2017. Most of the footprints were small and clearly made by children (10-14 people). The discovery at Le Rozel is the largest of rare fossil footprints of the hominin. Technically, some of the footprints were isolated one after another and 88 of them were complete footprints, having a length range between and . Neuville-au-Plain
Neuville-au-Plain () is a commune in the Manche department in Normandy in north-western France. History World War II On 6 June 1944 Neuville-au-Plain was one objective of the 505th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army in the invasion of Normandy. After capturing the commune early in the day, just 42 men of Company D/505 PIR, led by 1Lt Turner Brashears Turnbull III (who was killed the next day by an artillery shell), were left to defend it. A much larger German force, consisting mainly of the 1058th Grenadier Regiment of the 91st Infantry Division, counterattacked and half of the defenders were killed or wounded in a heavy 8 hour battle. Eventually two of the American defenders, Sergeant Robert Niland and Corporal James Kelly, volunteered to remain behind. They were among wounded members of the 3rd platoon who held the German force off long enough for the rest to escape. Sergeant Niland was killed during this action. See also *Communes of the ... Négreville
Négreville () is a commune in the department of Manche in the Normandy Region of north-western France. History In 12th century, this place was owned by the family Wake (or Wac), one of the Norman families who lost definitely their properties after the conquest of Normandy by Philip II of France in 1204. This area was close to the US landing beach Utah, one of the Normandy beaches where the allies invaded France on D-Day in June 1944. By the spring of the year, Négreville was occupied by the command post of the German ''Artillerie-Abteilung'' 456 (91 ''Infanterie-Division''). On 6 June 1944 an American Douglas C-47 airplane was hit by German artillery above the commune, leading the 19 paratroopers to immediately jump, some 12 kilometers short of their planned target; several were injured or killed.
