Armenian Political Crisis (2020–present)
The Armenian political crisis started in 2020 with the Azerbaijani offensive against the self-declared Republic of Artsakh which triggered mass protests in Armenia. The crisis escalated after the Peacekeeping operations in Nagorno-Karabakh, Russian peacekeeping force were not involved in the 2023 Azerbaijani offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh, third war leaving Armenia isolated. The war ended with the Flight of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians, flight of more than 100,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh. There had been multiple coup plots during the crisis. As of December 2023, parts of Armenia remains under Azerbaijani occupation. Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict
The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is an ethnic and territorial conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, inhabited mostly by ethnic Armenians until 2023, and seven surrounding districts, inhabited mostly by Azerbaijanis until their expulsion during the 1990s. The Nagorno-Karabakh region was entirely claimed by and partially controlled by the breakaway Republic of Artsakh, but was recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan gradually re-established control over Nagorno-Karabakh region and the seven surrounding districts. Throughout the Soviet period, Armenians in the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast were heavily discriminated against. Arbat Battalion
Over the course of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, irregular military units began to play a more prominent role in the fighting, alongside the regular Russian Armed Forces. In the face of waning recruitment levels for the military as casualties mounted, the Russian government increasingly turned to a variety of mercenaries, militias, paramilitaries, and mobilized convicts. In a similar fashion to the pro-Russian people's militias in Ukraine such as the DPR People's Militia and LPR People's Militia, the combat effectiveness of these irregular combatants varies greatly. This can be seen in the contrast between the poorly equipped and virtually untrained prisoners serving under Storm-Z and the professional mercenaries of PMC Wagner. Sev Hovaz
Sev Hovaz () is an Armenian militia and paramilitary that fought in the First Nagorno-Karabakh war on behalf of the Republic of Artsakh. History The unit was founded in 1989 by locals from Janfida and other nearby villages. In 1990 the unit had 69 members form the "Armavir Volunteer Company" which eventually swelled to a battalion fighting in the First Nagorno-Karabakh war seeing 11 casualties with 9 members being decorated for their service. After the war the militia and its leadership became active politically, with its founder Rustam Gasparyan being elected to the National Assembly as a member of Prosperous Armenia. He led Sev Hovaz during the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020 where on October 17, he and his son where killed by an Azerbaijani drone strike. The Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia (, abbreviated ՀՀ ԶՈՒ, ''HH ZU''), sometimes referred to as the Armenian Army (), is the national military of Armenia. The 2022 Armenian protests (also known as the Resistance Movement; ) were a series of anti-government protests in Armenia that started on 5 April 2022. The protests continued into June 2022, and many protesters were detained by police in Yerevan. I Have Honor Alliance
I Have Honor () is a political alliance in Armenia. It was founded on 15 May 2021 as an alliance between the Republican Party of Armenia and the Homeland Party. The Homeland Party withdrew from the alliance in June 2022. History The alliance was formed during the 2020–2021 Armenian protests. Both the Republican Party and the Homeland Party were previous members of the Homeland Salvation Movement and called on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to resign following Armenia's defeat in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war. Both parties subsequently left the Homeland Salvation Movement to form the I Have Honor alliance. The alliance had confirmed that they would participate in the 2021 Armenian parliamentary elections.
