Armenian Mathematical Union
The Armenian Mathematical Union or AMU (Armenian: , ՀՄՄ) is a mathematical society founded in Armenia in 1991. The AMU is based in Yerevan, and has been a member of the European Mathematical Society since 2016. It is recognised by the International Mathematics Union as the official mathematical society of Armenia. History The first association of Armenian mathematicians was formed in 1920, during the First Armenian Republic; its president was Ervand Kogbetlianz, a professor at Yerevan State University. The modern Armenian Mathematical Union was founded in 1991, the same year that Armenia gained independence due to the dissolution of the USSR. In 2020 the AMU dedicated its annual session to the 100th anniversary of the first association. Activities and awards The AMU has organised several international conferences. Emil Artin
Emil Artin (; March 3, 1898 – December 20, 1962) was an Austrians, Austrian mathematician of Armenians, Armenian descent. Artin was one of the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century. He is best known for his work on algebraic number theory, contributing largely to class field theory and a new construction of L-functions. He also contributed to the pure theories of rings, groups and fields. Along with Emmy Noether, he is considered the founder of modern abstract algebra. Early life and education Parents Emil Artin was born in Vienna to parents Emma Maria, née Laura (stage name Clarus), a soubrette on the operetta stages of Austria and Germany, and Emil Hadochadus Maria Artin, Austrian-born of mixed Austrians, Austrian and Armenian people, Armenian descent. American Mathematical Society
The American Mathematical Society (AMS) is an association of professional mathematicians dedicated to the interests of mathematical research and scholarship, and serves the national and international community through its publications, meetings, advocacy and other programs. The society is one of the four parts of the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics and a member of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences. History The AMS was founded in 1888 as the New York Mathematical Society, the brainchild of Thomas Fiske, who was impressed by the London Mathematical Society on a visit to England. ''Notices of the American Mathematical Society'' is the membership journal of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), published monthly except for the combined June/July issue. The first volume was published in 1953. Each issue of the magazine since January 1995 is available in its entirety on the journal web site. Articles are peer-reviewed by an editorial board of mathematical experts. Beginning with the January 2025 issue, the editor-in-chief is Mark C. Wilson, succeeding past editor Erica Flapan. The cover regularly features mathematical visualizations. The ''Notices'' is self-described to be the world's most widely read mathematical journal. Yerevan State University
Yerevan State University (YSU; , , ), also simply University of Yerevan, is the oldest continuously operating public university in Armenia. Founded in 1919, it is the largest university in the country. It is thus informally known as Armenia's "mother university" (, ). Of its 3,150 employees, 1,190 comprise the teaching staff, which includes 25 academicians, 130 professors, 700 docents (associate professors), and 360 assistant lecturers. The university has 400 researchers, 1,350 post-graduate students, and 8,500 undergraduates, including 300 students from abroad. First Armenian Republic
The First Republic of Armenia, officially known at the time of its existence as the Republic of Armenia, was an independent Armenian state that existed from May (28th ''de jure'', 30th ''de facto'') 1918 to 2 December 1920 in the Armenian-populated territories of the former Russian Empire known as Eastern or Russian Armenia. The republic was established in May 1918, with its capital in the city of Yerevan, after the dissolution of the short-lived Transcaucasian Federation. It was the first Armenian state since the Middle Ages.
