Armands Ābols
Armands Ābols is a Latvian pianist. In 1992 Abols won at 18 Barcelona's Maria Canals International Music Competition. Three years later he took part at the XIII Paloma O'Shea Competition, the dean of Spanish piano competitions; he made it to the finals, ranking along the rest of the finalists second to Enrico Pompili - the Grand Prize was declared void, a decision Ābols criticised. In 1993 he began a concert career, regularly performing through South America. In the mid-90s he settled in Chile. Maria Canals International Music Competition
The Maria Canals International Music Competition (, ) is a music competition held yearly in the Palau de la Música Catalana, Barcelona. It was founded as a piano competition in 1954, but in 1964 it was expanded so other modalities could be held occasionally. It was founded in 1954 by the Catalan pianist Maria Remei Canals i Cendrós (1913–2010) and her husband, the composer and writer Rossend Llates (1899–1973). Since 1954, the Competition has welcomed over 7,000 participants from 100 countries and 180 jury members from all over the world. It became a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions in 1958. The Maria Canals competition, for which artists such as Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies and Joan Clavé have made publicity posters, was declared to be of public utility by the Spanish Interior Ministry in 1996. Paloma O'Shea International Piano Competition
The Paloma O'Shea Santander International Piano Competition (in Spanish: Concurso Internacional de Piano de Santander "Paloma O'Shea") is a piano competition taking place in Santander, Spain. Founded in 1972 by Paloma O'Shea as a national prize, it turned into an international competition in its 2nd edition, and was professionalized in the mid-1970s, being accepted into the World Federation of International Music Competitions in 1976. Organized by the Albéniz Foundation and chaired by the Infanta Margarita and sponsored by a network of civil service and private companies, it arranges an extensive world tour for the winners, including debuts in auditoriums such as the National Auditorium of Music and the Wigmore Hall and cash prizes. Enrico Pompili
Enrico Pompili (born 1968 in Bolzano) is an Italian pianist. A native of Bolzano, he won several Italian national competitions before receiving recognition at the Dublin International Piano Competition. In 1994 he was second to Viktor Lyadov at the Hamamatsu Competition, and next year he was awarded the 2nd prize at the XIII Paloma O'Shea Santander International Piano Competition - 1st prize void. This success launched his international career starting from 1996. He has recorded Niccolò Castiglioni (Col Legno) and Alberto Ginastera's complete piano works (Phoenix Classics).
