State Route 564, also known as SR 564, is a state highway in northern Arizona serving Navajo National Monument. This highway travels from U.S. Route 160 to Betatakin Ruin; SR 564 derives its number from the former route number of the adjacent stretch of US 160, U.S. Route 164. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT, ) is an Arizona state government agency charged with facilitating mobility within the state. Navajo National Monument
Navajo National Monument is a national monument located within the northwest portion of the Navajo Nation territory in northern Arizona, which was established to preserve three well-preserved cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloan people: Keet Seel (Broken Pottery) (), Betatakin (Ledge House) (), and Inscription House (). The monument is high on the Shonto plateau, overlooking the Tsegi Canyon system, west of Kayenta, Arizona. It features a visitor center with a museum, three short self-guided trails, two small primitive campgrounds that are free to the public, and a picnic area. The Sandal Trail is an accessible self-guided roundtrip trail that ends at an overlook of the Betatakin ruins across the deep Betatakin Canyon. The overlook is the only point in the monument where visitors can view the cliff dwelling other than on the guided tours. The U.S. state of Arizona's State Routes are usually abbreviated as SR. History The Arizona State Highway system was introduced on September 9, 1927, by the State Highway Commission (formed on August 11 of the same year). It incorporated the new federal aid system and also the U.S. Highway system. The 1927 plan included 27 state routes, most of which were simply dirt roads. Until 1942, the state route marker signs contained a Western use of the swastika in the early 20th century, Native American swastika that were used by Navajo Nation, Navajos, but were removed after the U.S.'s entry into World War II against Nazi Germany which had a reversed swastika as its emblem and became strongly negatively associated with the Nazis. The modern system was introduced and adopted in the 1950s.
