Arizona's 8th Legislative District
Arizona's 8th legislative district is one of 30 in the state, consisting of a section of Maricopa County. As of 2023, there are 57 precincts in the district, all in Maricopa, with a total registered voter population of 117,848. The district has an overall population of 244,166. Following the 2020 United States redistricting cycle, the Redistricting in Arizona, Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (AIRC) redrew legislative district boundaries in Arizona. According to the AIRC, the district is outside of competitive range and considered leaning Democratic. Juan Mendez (politician)
Juan Jose Mendez (born May 18, 1985) is an American politician and State Senator from Arizona. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Education Born and raised in Arizona, Mendez attended Tolleson Union High School and received an associate degree from Phoenix College. He later received a bachelor's degree from Arizona State University, majoring in political science. Career Mendez was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2012. He served on the Insurance and Retirement Committee and the Reform and Human Services Committee. Mendez supports closing "tax loopholes" for out-of-state corporations, raising education funding, and more restrictions on gifts to legislators. He opposes Arizona SB 1070 and allowing guns in schools. Mendez is an atheist, and one of few atheist politicians serving in the United States. Arizona Senate
The Arizona State Senate is part of the Arizona Legislature, the state legislature of the US state of Arizona. The Senate consists of 30 members each representing an average of 219,859 constituents (2009 figures). Members serve two-year terms with term limits that limit Senators to four terms for a total of eight years. Members of the Republican Party are currently the majority in the Senate. There is currently 16 women serving in the Senate after Raquel Terán was appointed, making it the first time a majority of the body was composed of female members. Athena Salman (born 1989) is an American politician and activist serving as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives from the 8th district since 2017. Early life and education Athena Salman was born in Phoenix, Arizona. Her family has roots in Mexico, Germany, and the West Bank. Salman led community service projects during her youth.
