Arena Tigray For Democracy and Sovereignty (), also known as Arena Tigray, is an Ethiopian political party based in the Tigray Region and participating in the Medrek coalition federally. Creation Arena Tigray was created by Gebru Asrat in the early 2000s, when he left the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front. Gebru Asrat
Gebru Asrat is an Ethiopian politician, former president of Tigray Region (1991–2001), and one of the top leaders of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) until around 2000, when he founded a new party, Arena Tigray. Early life Gebru was born in Mekelle, Ethiopia and attended ''Atse'' Yohannes High School and Haile Selassie I University during the early 1970s. He holds an undergraduate and graduate degree in economics. Career After the TPLF defeated the Derg in the Ethiopian Civil War, Gebru became President of Tigray Region. Fano () is an ethno-nationalist Amhara militia and former protest movement. It has engaged in violent clashes throughout Ethiopia in the name of neutralizing perceived threats to the Amhara people. Fano has absorbed many units and personnel of the Amhara Regional Special Forces that did not integrate into the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF). Fano militias have been involved in armed conflicts with the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), and the ENDF. 2020 Tigray Regional Election
On 9 September 2020, the Ethiopian region of Tigray held an election for its state council. The election was considered illegal by the federal government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who postponed the 2020 general election earlier in the year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the election organisers, the Tigray People's Liberation Front won 98.2% of the vote and 100% of the 152 seats that were contested. Medrek
Medrek (), officially the Ethiopia Federal Democratic Unity Forum (), is an Ethiopian political coalition founded in 2008 by former defense minister Siye Abraha and former president Negasso Gidada. The election symbol of the party is five fingers. On 2008 election, Medrek won a single seat in the House of Peoples' Representatives, representing an electoral district in Addis Ababa.
