Area Code 284
Area code 284 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the British Virgin Islands (BVI). The numbering plan area (NPA) was created in a split of area code 809 on 1 October 1997, when a permissive dialing period existed until 30 September 1998. Within the British Virgin Islands, the seven digits are dialed for local calls. For calls from other NANP countries to the British Virgin Islands, the dialing sequence is ''1 NPA-XXX-XXXX'', where ''1'' is the NANP trunk access code. One ring scam The 284 area code has been linked to a form of telephone fraud known as the "one ring scam". The person perpetuating the scam calls the victim via a robodialer or similar means, sometimes at odd hours of the night and then hangs up when the phone is answered, with the hope that the victim will be curious enough to call the number back. When the victim does this, an automatic $19.95 international call fee is charged to their account as well as $9.00/min thereafter ...

Area Code
A telephone numbering plan is a type of numbering scheme used in telecommunication to assign telephone numbers to subscriber telephones or other telephony endpoints. Telephone numbers are the addresses of participants in a telephone network, reachable by a system of destination code routing. Telephone numbering plans are defined world-wide, as well as within each of the administrative regions of the public switched telephone network (PSTN), and in private telephone networks. In public numbering systems, geographic location typically plays a role in the sequence of numbers assigned to each telephone subscriber. Many numbering plan administrators subdivide their territory of service into geographic regions designated by a prefix, often called an area code or city code, which is a set of digits forming the most-significant part of the dialing sequence to reach a telephone subscriber. Within such regions designated by area codes, locally unique telephone number are assigned based on ...

North American Numbering Plan
The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) is an integrated telephone numbering plan for twenty-five regions in twenty countries, primarily in North America and the Caribbean. This group is historically known as World Zone 1, World Numbering Zone 1 and has the telephone country code, country code ''1''. Some North American countries, most notably Telephone numbers in Mexico, Mexico, do not participate in the NANP. The concepts of the NANP were devised originally during the 1940s by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) for the Bell System and the independent telephone companies in North America in Operator Toll Dialing. The first task was to unify the diverse local telephone numbering plans that had been established during the preceding decades, with the goal to speed call completion times and decrease the costs for long-distance calling, by reducing manual labor by switchboard operators. Eventually, it prepared the continent for direct-dialing of long-distance calls ...

Area Code Split
In telecommunications, an area code split is the practice of introducing a new telephone area code by geographically dividing an existing numbering plan area (NPA), and assigning area codes to the resulting divisions, but retaining the existing area code only for one of the divisions. The purpose of this practice is to provide more central office prefixes, and therefore more telephone numbers, in an area with high demand for telecommunication services, and prevent a shortage of telephone numbers. An increasing demand for telephone numbers has existed since the development of automatic telephony in the early 20th century, but was spurred especially since the 1990s, with the proliferation of fax machines, pager systems, mobile telephones, computer modems and, eventually, smart phones. The implementation of an area code split typically involves the establishment of a Class-4 toll switching center for each division of the existing numbering plan area that receive a new area code. ...

Area Code 809
Area codes 809, 829, and 849 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the Dominican Republic. Like all NANP members, the Dominican Republic uses country code ''1'', and has similar dialing procedures for dialing the 10-digit national telephone numbers, which consist of the area code, a three-digit central office code, and a four-digit line number. The three area codes of the country are organized as an overlay plan for a single numbering plan area (NPA), comprising the entire country. Thus, 10-digit dialing is mandatory. Area code 809 Area code 809 was assigned in 1958 to Bermuda and the Caribbean islands. However, Cuba, Haiti, the Netherlands Antilles, and the French West Indies decided not to participate in the North American Numbering Plan. Beginning with Bermuda in November 1994, and the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and Barbados in 1995, several countries in the Caribbean received individual area code assignments from the NANPA, effectively splitting a ...

Telephone Fraud
Phone fraud, or more generally communications fraud, is the use of telecommunications products or services with the intention of illegally acquiring money from, or failing to pay, a telecommunication company or its customers. Many operators have increased measures to minimize fraud and reduce their losses. Communications operators tend to keep their actual loss figures and plans for corrective measures confidential. According to a 2011 survey by CFCA, an industry group created to reduce fraud against carriers, the five top fraud loss categories reported by operators were: * $4.96 billion – compromised PBX/voicemail systems * $4.32 billion – subscription/identity theft * $3.84 billion – International Revenue Share Fraud * $2.88 billion – by-pass fraud * $2.40 billion – cash fraud Types of frauds Fraud against users by phone companies * '' Cramming'' is the addition of charges to a subscriber's telephone bill for services which were neither ordered nor desired by t ...

Area Code 473
Area code 473 is the local telephone area code of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. The 473 area code, which spells GRE, was created during a split from the original area code 809 which began permissive dialing on 31 October 1997 and ended 31 October 1998. For calls placed within Grenada, Carriacou or Petite Martinique, only the seven-digit local number is dialed. Calls to Grenada from anywhere in the United States or Canada are dialed 1 + 473 + seven-digit phone number. Telephone fraud The 473 area code has been linked to a form of telephone fraud known as the "one ring scam". The person perpetrating the scam calls the victim via a robodialer or similar means, sometimes at odd hours of the night, then hangs up when the phone is answered with the hope that the victim will be curious enough to call the number back. Area Code 268
Area code 268 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for Antigua and Barbuda. The area code digit sequence translates to ''ANT'' on a standard US alphanumeric telephone keypad, providing a mnemonic designation. The area code was activated on April 1, 1996 by division of numbering plan area 809 which used to comprise all Caribbean countries and Bermuda. A permissive dialing period during which the old and the new area code could be used to call the new NPA was in effect for a period of one year until March 31, 1997. Foreign NPA calls to new telephone numbers in 268 required the new area code. For local calling in Antigua and Barbuda, seven-digit dialing is in effect. Foreign NPA direct dialed toll calls must be prefixed by the digit ''1'' (''1'' + 10 digits) while operator-assisted calls require ''0'' (''0'' + 10 digits). International dialing to other countries outside the NANP requires the international dialing prefix ''011'' before country code ...

Area Codes 876 And 658
Area codes 876 and 658 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for Jamaica. Having telephone service to the United States as early as 1936, it was not until 1962 that Jamaica had a high-capacity link for dial service to the US network, which was operated as part of the NANP numbering plan area 809. 809 was designated for parts of the Caribbean region in 1958, and was divided in the 1990s for service to individual countries. Area code 876 was created on 1 May 1997 for Jamaica. In 2019, the numbering plan area received a second area code, 658, in formation of an overlay to relieve central office code exhaustion. The telephone country code for reaching telephone numbers in the country is ''1''. From other NANP member regions, the dialing pattern is ''1-876/658 NXX-XXXX'', where ''1'' is the NANP long-distance trunk prefix. History In 1936, AT&T installed the first telephone service extensions to Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and El Salvador in the Caribbean.A ...

List Of NANP Area Codes
The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) divides the territories of its members into geographic numbering plan areas (NPAs). Each NPA is identified by one or more numbering plan area codes (''NPA codes'', or ''area codes''), consisting of three digits that are prefixed to each local telephone number having seven digits. A numbering plan area with multiple area codes is called an overlay plan, overlay. Area codes are also assigned for non-geographic purposes. The rules for numbering NPAs do not permit the digits ''0'' and ''1'' in the leading position.AT&T (1955) ''Notes on Distance Dialing'' Area codes with two identical trailing digits are ''easily recognizable codes'' (ERC). NPAs with ''9'' in the second position are reserved for future format expansion. Area codes in numerical order Area codes that are not in use are listed in italic type face; and unassignable codes are bolded. The column ''Date'' lists either the date or year of assignment before implementation, or the in-se ...

Area Codes In The Caribbean
Several countries in the Caribbean participate in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), which is a telephone numbering plan designed after world War II by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company for initially the United States and Canada. in 1958, AT&T delegated area code 809 for Direct Distance Dialing to the Caribbean to begin integration of the Caribbean telephone networks into the NANP. From 1958 to 1999, most of the British West Indies in the Caribbean Basin, Bermuda, the United States Virgin Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico shared area code 809. By the mid-1990s, with the proliferation of fax machines, mobile phones, computers, and pagers in the region, the pool of available central office codes was exhausting. Beginning with Bermuda in November 1994, and The Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and Barbados in 1995, several countries in the Caribbean received individual area code assignments from the NANPA, effectively splitting area code 809. Telephone Numbers In The United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom and the Crown Dependencies, telephone numbers are administered by the Office of Communications (Ofcom). For this purpose, Ofcom established a telephone numbering plan, known as the ''National Telephone Numbering Plan'', which is the system for assigning telephone numbers to subscriber stations. Telephone numbers are of variable length. Local numbers are supported from landlines. Numbers can be dialled with a '0'-lead prefix that denotes either a geographical region or another service. Mobile phone numbers have distinct prefixes that are not geographic, and are portable between providers. Structure All mobile numbers, nearly all geographic numbers, and nearly all non-geographic numbers have ten national (significant) digits after the trunk code ''0''. The overall structure of the UK's National Numbering Plan is: A short sample of geographic numbers, set out in the officially approved (Ofcom) number groups: In the United Kingdom, the "area code" is o ...
