Area code 206 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the U.S. state of Washington. The numbering plan area (NPA) includes Seattle and most of its innermost suburbs. This includes such suburbs as Shoreline and Lake Forest Park; Mercer, Bainbridge, and Vashon Islands; and portions of metropolitan Seattle from Des Moines to Woodway. On June 10, 2025, the numbering plan area will be converted to an overlay complex with area code 564, which also overlays 360. History Area code 206 was one of the original North American area codes assigned in 1947, when it served the entire state of Washington. Flash-cut
A flash cut, also called a flash cutover, is an immediate change in a complex system, with no phase-in period. In the United States, some telephone area codes were split or overlaid immediately, rather than being phased in with a permissive dialing period. An example is telephone area code 213, which serves downtown Los Angeles and its immediate environs, split in January 1951 into 213 and 714 all at once. Another example is an immediate switch from an analog television channel to a digital television channel on the same frequency, where the two cannot operate in parallel without interference. A flash cut can also define a procedure in which multiple components of computer infrastructure are upgraded in multiple ways, all at once, with no phase-in period. List Of Washington (state) Area Codes
The U.S. state of Washington has six telephone area codes serving five distinct numbering plan areas. The state initially used a single area code (206) until it was divided in 1957 with the creation of area code 509 to serve Eastern Washington. In 1995, 206 was split again to serve just the Puget Sound region after area code 360 was created for the remainder of Western Washington. In 1997, area code 425 was assigned to Seattle's Eastside and South Snohomish County suburbs and area code 253 for the Tacoma area, leaving 206 for just the city of Seattle, closely neighboring cities in King and Snohomish counties, and Bainbridge Island in Kitsap County.
