Archives Africaines (Belgium)
The Archives Africaines of the Belgian Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs in Brussels contains records related to colonial Congo Free State, Belgian Congo and Ruanda-Urundi, 1885-1962. The archives was transferred in 1960 to the Ministère belge des Affaires étrangères. In 2015 the archives went to the Belgian State Archives, an arrangement expected to continue until 2018. The Archives Africaines includes "the archives of the former Ministry for Colonies (5 km), the archives of the Governor-General of the Congo (4.5 km), and the files on former colonial personnel (1.4 km)." Cairn
A cairn is a man-made pile (or stack) of stones raised for a purpose, usually as a marker or as a burial mound. The word ''cairn'' comes from the gd, càrn (plural ). Cairns have been and are used for a broad variety of purposes. In prehistoric times, they were raised as markers, as memorials and as burial monuments (some of which contained chambers). In modern times, cairns are often raised as landmarks, especially to mark the summits of mountains. Cairns are also used as trail markers. Royal Museum For Central Africa
The Royal Museum for Central Africa or RMCA ( nl, Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika or KMMA; french: Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale or MRAC; german: Königliches Museum für Zentralafrika or KMZA), also officially known as the AfricaMuseum, is an ethnography and natural history museum situated in Tervuren in Flemish Brabant, Belgium, just outside Brussels. It was built to showcase King Leopold II's Congo Free State in the International Exposition of 1897. The museum focuses on the Congo, a former Belgian colony. The sphere of interest, however, especially in biological research, extends to the whole Congo River basin, Middle Africa, East Africa, and West Africa, attempting to integrate "Africa" as a whole. The Bibliothèque Africaine (African Library) in Belgium is a research library of Africana. Belgian king Léopold II founded it in 1885 during the period of foreign colonization of the Congo and the establishment of the colonial Congo Free State. The library became the responsibility of the Ministry of the Colonies in 1908. As of 2003 it contained some 230,000 volumes. It is now part of the Bibliothèque des Affaires Etrangères, overseen by the Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs, and since June 2017, accessible through the Royal Library of Belgium in Brussels.
