Archie P. McDonald
Archie Philip McDonald (November 29, 1935–August 16, 2012) was an American historian with a focus on the history of Texas. He served as director of the East Texas Historical Association as well as editor of the ''East Texas Historical Journal'', from 1971 until his 2008 retirement, a 37 year span. For over 40 years of his life, he was faculty at Stephen F. Austin State University, and during his tenure also served as the university's community liaison. By 1983, he had authored 16 books, largely about Texan history; that number had risen to over 20 by 2003. Personal life Archie McDonald was married to Judy McDonald, mayor e''meritus'' of Nacogdoches. Together they won the Ralph W. Steen Memorial East Texan of the Year Award in 2009. Archie died on August 16, 2012, and his memorial service was held August 20. Beaumont is a city in the U.S. state of Texas. Lamar University (Lamar or LU) is a public university in Beaumont, Texas, United States. Lamar has been a member of the Texas State University System since 1995. The Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) is an American nonprofit educational and research organization dedicated to documenting the history of Texas. It was founded in Austin, Texas, United States, on March 2, 1897. In November 2008, the TSHA moved its offices from Austin to the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. In 2015, the offices were relocated again to the University of Texas at Austin. History On February 13, 1897, ten persons convened to discuss the creation of a nonprofit to promote Texas state history. George Pierce Garrison, chair of the University of Texas history department, led the organizational meeting establishing the association on March 2, 1893.
