Arcen
Arcen (; li, Árse) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. In 2010, it became part of the municipality of Venlo. Previously, it had been part of the municipality of Arcen en Velden and the seat of the town hall (). In 2001, Arcen had 1884 inhabitants. Arcen en Velden (; li, Árse en Velde) is a former town and former municipality in the southeastern Netherlands, now part of the municipality and city of Venlo. It is situated in the province of Limburg. Hertog Jan () is a brewery in the Netherlands. Originally Hertog Jan was a brand only, owned by distributor De Kikvorsch in Deest. Under this brand several types of beer were released, of which the top-fermenting beers were all made at the Arcense Stoombierbrouwerij in Arcen. In the early 1980s the brewery had played a major role in the revival of beer culture in the Netherlands. In 1995 it became part of the international Interbrew (later InBev, now Anheuser–Busch InBev) group and in 1998 was renamed to Hertog Jan Brouwerij. Stanislaus "Stan" Henricus Christina Valckx (born 20 October 1963) is a Dutch former professional footballer who played as a central defender. Club career Valckx was born in Arcen, Limburg. After starting professionally with VVV-Venlo ( second division), he moved in 1988 to Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven, being instrumental in the conquest of three leagues and two Dutch Cups – in the 1991–92 season, he scored four goals in 28 matches as the team renewed their domestic supremacy. In 1992, Valckx, aged 28, moved abroad, to Sporting Clube de Portugal, helping the Lisbon side to the Portuguese Cup three years later, although he did not play in the final against C.S. Marítimo as in October 1994 he had already returned to his country and PSV, where he won one more league and another domestic cup before retiring in June 2000 at nearly 37 years of age, with more than 500 official appearances to his credit. Limburg (Netherlands)
Limburg (, ) is the southernmost of the twelve provinces of the Netherlands. It is bordered by Gelderland to the north and by North Brabant to its west. The Fossa Eugeniana or Spanish Rhine-Maas canal was a large-scale ambitious project of the Spanish-Dutch Eighty Years' War planned by the then Spanish regent in Brussels, Isabella Clara Eugenia, after whom it was named, during the years 1626–1630. It consisted of a fortified canal intended to blockade the United Provinces and to divert trade from the Rhine near Rheinberg just south of Wesel and reroute it to Venlo on the Maas, in Spanish territory.
