"Appropriation (By Any Other Name)" is a 7-inch single and CD release by Sheffield band the Long Blondes. It was released on June 13, 2005 on Angular Records. The song is a homage to Hitchcock's 1958 film Vertigo. it has been said that this song is told from the point of view of Judy, due to lines such as "When I met you, I never wore dresses like that" and "You can't have me, make me act the same". Lead singer Kate Jackson painted two different portraits for the CD single and 7-inch single. They both depicted Kim Novak's characters Madeleine Elster and Judy Barton. The song was not featured on their debut album Someone to Drive You Home, but the b-side, ''Lust In The Movies'' was. Both were featured on the compilation album "Singles". The Long Blondes
The Long Blondes are an English indie rock band formed in Sheffield in 2003 by Dorian Cox (lead guitar and keyboards), Reenie Hollis (real name Kathryn Hollis) (bass guitar and backing vocals), Emma Chaplin (rhythm guitar, keyboards and backing vocals), Kate Jackson (lead vocals) and Screech Louder (real name Mark Turvey, drums). After several critically acclaimed singles, they released their debut album, ''Someone to Drive You Home'', on Rough Trade Records in November 2006. Their second album, '' Couples'', was produced by Erol Alkan and released in April 2008. On 20 October 2008, due to the unexpected illness of their primary songwriter and lead guitarist, Dorian Cox, the band announced their amicable split via a message on their website, the same day their singles compilation, '' "Singles"'' was released. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Angular Recording Corporation
Angular Recording Corporation was an independent record label founded in New Cross, South East London. It was established in June 2003 by two ex- Goldsmiths College students, Joe Daniel and Joe Margetts, who reclaimed a local Ordnance Survey Triangulation Station and made it their first artefact: ARC 001. The label's founders were influenced by a love of angular pop music and the Manchester label Factory Records. Gaining funding through medical testing, Angular Recording Corporation was able to finance its debut release in November 2003, the '' NME''-championed ''The New Cross : An Angular Sampler'', making it the lead review in the magazine. In the 2011 England riots, the label lost all its stock and entire back catalogue in the PIAS warehouse fire. An ''Angular Store'' website remains active. "Giddy Stratospheres" was a 7-inch single only release by Sheffield band the Long Blondes. It was released on 29 November 2004, on Angular Records. The single was accompanied by two B-sides, "Polly" and "Darts". The single was re-released in 2007 and was the third major label single from their debut album, ''Someone to Drive You Home''. The single peaked at number 37 on the UK Singles Chart. Both versions were very well received by critics. Music and structure "Giddy Stratospheres" is a fast-tempo song, at 136 beats per minute (bpm), and in the key of B major for the verses. For the chorus, it switches to a slightly faster tempo (142 bmp) and changes to a key of E-flat major. Its style combines post-punk, indie pop and disco. The main chord pattern of the verse alternates between G sharp minor and B major triads, the chorus switching to A-flat major, F minor and C minor. Kate Jackson (singer)
Kate Jackson (born 16 September 1979) is an English singer who was formerly the lead-singer with The Long Blondes. She now performs under the name Kate Jackson & The Wrong Moves. Biography Jackson attended Culford School in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk and took leading parts in the school's performing arts shows. In the late 1990s, she moved to Sheffield to study English and History. Soon after graduating, Jackson began writing and performing with fellow graduates of the city's universities forming The Long Blondes. Whilst the band were unsigned, she studied fine art and also worked at Freshman's Boutique, a vintage clothing shop in Sheffield. This interest in vintage clothing became a distinctive feature of the image of The Long Blondes. Jackson herself describes her style as "Bonnie Parker meets a Carry On girl". ''Someone To Drive You Home'' is the debut album by The Long Blondes. It was released on November 6, 2006. It received widespread critical praise and was placed 7th in the '' NMEs best 50 albums of 2006 lisand features in many other best of lists for 2006. The predominant theme of the album is relationships from a female perspective, although 10 of the tracks on the album were written by male guitarist Dorian Cox. Themes dealt with include competition between females, isolation, sexual exploration and deceit. Influences of Pulp, Elastica, Morrissey and Blondie have been frequently quoted when the album is discussed in the media. The title of the album comes from a line in the song "You Could Have Both". The album's artwork is a painting by lead singer Kate Jackson; it is an image of Faye Dunaway in the film ''Bonnie and Clyde'', with a Mark 3 Ford Cortina as her getaway car.
