Appellate Division, First Department
The Supreme Court of the State of New York, Appellate Division, First Judicial Department, or simply the First Department, is one of the four geographical components of the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, the intermediate appellate court of the State of New York. Its courthouse is located in Manhattan, New York City. Jurisdiction The First Department of the Appellate Division holds jurisdiction over the Counties of New York and the Bronx. Appeals are taken to the Appellate Division, as a matter of right, in civil and criminal cases, from the Supreme Court, Surrogate's Court, Family Court, and Court of Claims. Along with the state's other three Appellate Departments, it shares responsibility for all admissions to the New York bar. Under the state's bar admission rules, all bar applicants must be interviewed in person by one of the Appellate Departments. The Appellate Division Courthouse of New York State, First Department, is a courthouse at the northeast corner of Madison Avenue and 25th Street in the Flatiron District neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City, New York, U.S. The courthouse is used by the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department, First Department of the New York Supreme Court's New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Appellate Division. The original three-story building on 25th Street and Madison Avenue, designed by James Brown Lord in the Renaissance Revival architecture, Renaissance Revival style, was finished in 1899. A six-story annex to the north, on Madison Avenue, was designed by Rogers & Butler and completed in 1955. The facade of both the original building and its annex are made almost entirely out of marble. George Landon Ingraham
George Landon Ingraham (August 1, 1847 – January 24, 1931) was a lawyer and judge in New York City. Biography Ingraham was born in New York City in 1847 to Mary Landon Ingraham and Daniel P. Ingraham, the presiding justice for the First District of the New York State Supreme Court. He graduated from Columbia Law School in 1869, was admitted to the New York City Bar Association the same year, and began a lucrative law practice. In 1882 he was elected to a judgeship on the Superior Court of New York City. In 1891 he was appointed to the New York State Supreme Court by New York Governor David B. Hill. He became one of the first associate justices of the Appellate Division, First Judicial Department of the Supreme Court of New York State upon formation of its appellate divisions in 1896. William Rumsey
William Rumsey (October 18, 1841 – January 16, 1903) was an American lawyer and judge from New York. Early life William Rumsey was born on October 18, 1841, in Bath, New York, to Ann E. Brown and judge David Rumsey. At the age of 16, in 1857, he attended Williams College. He was a member of the New York State Militia. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, on April 19, 1861, he left college. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. Due to his military service, the college graduated him in June 1861. Civil War In April 1861, Rumsey was ordered to report to duty to Elmira by General Edwin D. Morgan. He served under General Robert B. Van Valkenburgh as a recruiter until October 17.
