The Apostolic Vicariate of Arabia () was an apostolic vicariate of the Catholic Church with territorial jurisdiction for Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The last Apostolic Vicar is Msgr. Paul Hinder, OFM Cap. History The territory was originally part of the Vicariate Apostolic of the Gallas, but it was separated into an apostolic prefecture by Pope Pius IX on 21 January 1875. On 25 April 1888, Pope Leo XIII made the Apostolic Vicariate of Aden, located in Yemen. On the 28 June 1889, the name was changed to the Apostolic Vicariate of Arabia, responsible for the countries of the Arabian Peninsula and surrounding region: Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Somalia and Yemen. Louis-Callixte Lasserre
Louis-Callixte Lasserre, OFMCap was a French Capuchin. He served as a bishop and missionary in the Middle East and Africa. Life Louis was born in Morestel on 6 April 1839; at the age of 23, he joined the seminary on 22 August 1862 and was ordained a priest of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchins. On 15 March 1881, Pope Leo XIII'appointed him as Titular bishop of Marocco o Marruecos and Coadjutor Vicar Apostolic of Galla; he was consecrated on 10 December 1882 by The Vicar Apostolic of Galla, Bishop Louis-Taurin Cahagne, OFMCap Louis was supposed to succeed as the Vicar Apostolic of Galla. However, Pope Leo XIII appointed him as Prefect of Arabia in 1886, then as Vicar Apostolic of Aden on 25 April 1888. Apostolic Vicariate
An apostolic vicariate is a territorial jurisdiction of the Catholic Church under a titular bishop centered in missionary regions and countries where dioceses or parishes have not yet been established. The status of apostolic vicariate is often a promotion for a former apostolic prefecture, while either may have started out as a mission sui iuris, mission ''sui iuris''. It is essentially provisional, though it may last for a century or more. The hope is that the region will generate sufficient numbers of Catholicism, Catholics for the Church to create a diocese one day. Paul Hinder, OFMCap (born 22 April 1942) is a Swiss Catholic bishop. He is the Vicar Apostolic Emeritus of the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia. Bishop Hinder was previously appointed as an Auxiliary Bishop in the former Apostolic Vicariate of Arabia on 30 January 2004. Early life Paul Hinder was born in Bussnang, Switzerland, on 22 April 1942 to Wilhelm Hinder and Agnes Meile. He joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in 1962 and was ordained a priest on 4 July 1967. After specialized studies in canon law in Munich and Fribourg, he obtained his doctorate in theology in 1976. He was active as a professor, in the formation of young Capuchins, later as provincial in Switzerland and as General Councilor in Rome for the worldwide Capuchin Order.
