Anyway Records
__NOTOC__ Anyway Records is an independent record label based in Columbus, Ohio, which specializes in a Columbus brand of indie rock. It was established in 1991 by Bela Koe-Krompecher, called an "indie stalwart" by ''Entertainment Weekly''. During the 1990s, the label was considered the most well-known and prolific label in Columbus. ''The Other Paper'' called Anyway Records "arguably the most influential indie label in Columbus throughout the last half of the ‘90s." The early 2000s saw a reduction in offerings. However, since 2007, the label has put out records by The Whiles, The Kyle Sowashes, Moviola, and The Lindsay. "Song for Jerry", off of The Whiles album ''Colors of the Year'', appeared on the documentary ''Murderball''. The Whiles album ''Sleepers Wake'' was referred to by ''Columbus Alive'' as a "masterpiece." Independent Record Label
An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. The labels and artists are often represented by trade associations in their country or region, which in turn are represented by the international trade body, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN). Many of the labels started as producers and distributors of specific genres of music, such as jazz music, or represent something new and non-mainstream, such as Elvis Presley in the early days. Jenny Mae
Jennifer Mae Leffel, better known as Jenny Mae (1968–2017), was an American indie rock singer-songwriter, guitarist, and keyboardist. She was active first as a member of the band Vibralux, and later as a solo artist. Biography The second of five children, Leffel was born in South Vienna, Ohio in 1968. She became interested in music in elementary school, when she began playing the trumpet, which she proved very gifted at playing by ear. She went on to play trumpet in the marching band at Northeastern High School in Springfield, Ohio, where she was also on the cross country team and became a member of the National Honor Society. She went on to graduate from Ohio State University in 1986. Leffel started the short-lived bands the Rahvers and Hot Rod before founding Vibralux. In contrast to her previous acts, Vibralux played pop music influenced by her favorite artists – the Beach Boys and the Beatles. The Whiles
The Whiles is an American indie rock band, formed in Columbus, Ohio. History The founding members are Joe Peppercorn, Matt Peppercorn, Chris Bolognese, Paul Headley, Jake Remley and Zack Prout. Prout left the band after the release of its 2004 debut album, ''Colors of the Year''. '' Columbus Alive'' has referred to The Whiles as a "mainstay band in Columbus" AllMusic gave ''Colors of the Year'' four out of five stars, comparing The Whiles to Nick Drake and Gram Parsons. ''Blogcritics'' also observed that the album was "Delicately honest, these songs could break in half if not handled with care. Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments was a band from Columbus, Ohio active from 1989 to 2000. History The band was formed in 1989 by Ron House, the former frontman of the band Great Plains. The band is named after Thomas Jefferson's slave quarters at Monticello. Soon after their formation, they released several 7"s in the Columbus area. They followed these up with their debut album, ''Bait and Switch'', which they recorded at a cost of $800, and which was released in 1995 on American Recordings. This album was followed by their second album, ''Straight to Video'', in 1997 on Anyway Records. Also in 1997, the band released a compilation album, ''You Lookin' for Treble'', which contained singles the band had released from 1990 to 1992, as well as songs from an EP released during that time. New Bomb Turks
The New Bomb Turks are an American punk rock band formed at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, United States, in 1990. The founding members are Jim Weber, Eric Davidson, Bill Randt, and Matt Reber. Sam Brown replaced Bill Randt on drums in 1999. Early on their inspiration came from the Devil Dogs, Lazy Cowgirls, Union Carbide Productions, Didjits, and the Fluid. Music magazine ''Alternative Press'' has described their musical style, saying, "Not only have both prole-threat punk bashery and destructo-rock found fresh voices, they've been melded into a seamless new terror all its own."
