Nine (rapper)
Derrick Keyes (born September 19, 1969), known professionally as Nine, is an American rapper from The Bronx, New York City. He is also known as 9MM or Nine Double M. Keyes got his break in early 1993 as a featured guest on Funkmaster Flex and the Ghetto Celebs' "Six Million Ways to Die". Keyes originally recorded under the moniker 9MM (or Nine Double M) before changing his name to simply Nine. He stated, "I didn't want to be just be named after the gun ( 9mm)." His stage name refers to his date of birth (September 19, 1969), his shoe size, and his lucky number. Career Portions of Nine's "Whutcha Want?" were featured in advertisements by US automobile manufacturer Jeep. The ads used the song "Steady Bounce" by KRS-One from his album ''Strickly For Da Breakdancers & Emceez'', which also used a sample from Nine's "Whutcha Want?". Profile Records
Profile Records was one of the earliest hip hop labels. As well as hip-hop they released disco, dance, and electro records. History In 1980, Cory Robbins, who was 23 at the time and had worked briefly for MCA, wanted to start a record label. He invited his songwriter friend Steve Plotnicki to be a partner. They each borrowed $17,000 from their parents, purchased the little used Panorama Records subsidiary from MCA, and Profile Records was born. Their tiny office opened at 250 West 57th street in NYC on May 1, 1981. With the success of “Genius Rap” by Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, they escaped financial ruin by a mere $2,000. From there it was Gidea Park's “Seasons of Gold” that brought more commercial and financial success, becoming Profile Records’ first hit to make the Billboard Hot 100. Rob Lewis (record Producer)
Rob Lewis is a record producer from the Bronx, New York who met D.J. Chuck Chillout, a legendary New York hip-hop D.J. and radio personality, and crew (Kool Chip, Deuces Wild and D.J. Funkmaster Flex) during the late 1980s / early 1990s and was asked to do pre-production on Chuck and Chip's album, "Rhythm is the Master". Lewis being an unknown producer was introduced to D.J. Chuck Chillout by DJ Wildstyle from Co-Op City in the Bronx. Wildstyle suggested that Lewis create a radio promo for Chuck. A radio promo is a short musical segment giving props and promotion to the radio D.J. and these promos were very popular at the time. Lewis's promo, known as "Chuck Is Chillin', was revolutionary for that time as it was created using individual word samples taken from various records and strung together to create a new lyric line. Whutcha Want?
"Whutcha Want?" is the lead single released from Nine's debut album, ''Nine Livez''. Produced by Rob Lewis, "Whutcha Want?" was Nine's most successful single, becoming his only one to make it to the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, peaking at 50 on the chart, as well as making it to 3 on the Rap charts. "Whutcha Want?" sampled four different songs. "The Dock of the Bay" by The Staple Singers, "Spinning Wheel" by Dr. Lonnie Smith, "Catch a Groove" by Juice and " Best of My Love" by The Emotions. There are also five samples that as yet remain unidentified that appear around the 2:33 mark. The song also has been sampled itself by the Beastie Boys on their song "Putting Shame in Your Game" and "Natalie's Rap" by The Lonely Island and Natalie Portman. Several remixes were made for the song. "Lyin' King" is the first single released from Nine's second album, ''Cloud 9''. It was released on July 23, 1996 and was produced by Rob Lewis. "Lyin' King" was Nine's final charting single, making it to three different Billboard charts, including 35 on the Hot Rap Singles. The song is an indirect diss aimed at rappers who were trying to capitalize on the popular Mafioso rap at the time. The Spinners (American Band)
The Spinners are an American rhythm and blues vocal group that formed in Ferndale, Michigan, United States, in 1954. They enjoyed a string of hit singles and albums during the 1960s and 1970s, particularly with producer Thom Bell. The group continues to tour, with Henry Fambrough as the only original member. The group is also listed as the Detroit Spinners and the Motown Spinners, due to their 1960s recordings with the Motown label. These other names were used in the UK to avoid confusion with a British folk group also called The Spinners. On June 30, 1976, they received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. "I'll Be Around" is a song recorded by the American R&B vocal group The Spinners (known as "Detroit Spinners" in the UK). It was co-written by Thom Bell and Phil Hurtt and produced by Bell. Recorded at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studios, the house band MFSB provided the backing. The production of the song gives it a smooth, mid-tempo feel, with the signature guitar riff (in octaves) played by Norman Harris at the forefront and punctuation from female background singers, the MFSB horns & strings and conga-playing from Larry Washington. Bobby Smith handles lead vocals on the song. The song was included on the group's 1973 self-titled album on Atlantic Records, their first album release for the label.
