Minas Gerais () is a state in Southeastern Brazil. It ranks as the second most populous, the third by gross domestic product (GDP), and the fourth largest by area in the country. The state's capital and largest city, Belo Horizonte (literally "Beautiful Horizon"), is a major urban and finance center in Latin America, and the sixth largest municipality in Brazil, after the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Brasília and Fortaleza, but its metropolitan area is the third largest in Brazil with just over 5.8 million inhabitants, after those of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Rubem Siqueira Maia
Rubem Siqueira Maia (Curvelo, February 15, 1908 – Coronel Fabriciano, January 20, 1982) was a Brazilian physician and politician. After living in São João del-Rei during his childhood and graduating from the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, School of Medicine of Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), he moved to Vale do Rio Doce (mesoregion), Vale do Rio Doce to work on the construction of the Vitória-Minas Railway (EFVM) in the 1930s. Later, he settled in Antônio Dias, where he was elected mayor. He stood out as one of the creators of the ''Hospital Siderúrgica'' (currently Doutor José Maria Morais Hospital) next to Belgo-Mineira Steel Company in the district of Melo Viana. He also created a pro-emancipation commission for the district, supported by his childhood friend and state deputy Tancredo Neves.
