Antonio Ortega (soldier)
Antonio Ortega Gutiérrez (17 January 1888 – 15 July 1939) was a Spanish Republican military officer and acting president of Madrid Football Club between 1937 and 1938 during the Spanish Civil War. He was directly involved in the defense of Madrid. Spanish Civil War A professional officer of the Spanish Army, he supported the Republican government during the Spanish Civil War. Before the war he was a lieutenant of ''Carabineros'' of the Second Spanish Republic stationed in Irun. On 6 August 1936, following the Coup, he was appointed civil governor of Gipuzkoa. He took command of the Republican forces during the later part of the Campaign of Guipúzcoa after the capture of Augusto Pérez Garmendia at Oiartzun. The Nationalist faction (), also Rebel faction () and Francoist faction () was a major faction in the Spanish Civil War of 1936 to 1939. The National Defence Council () was the governing body in Second Spanish Republic, Republican Spain at the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). The council seized power with Spanish coup of March 1939, Colonel Segismundo Casado's coup on 5 March 1939 when it was clear that the Republican faction (Spanish Civil War), Republicans had lost the war. The leaders hoped to negotiate an end to hostilities with the Nationalist faction (Spanish Civil War), rebel forces led by General Francisco Franco. Luis Barceló Jover (31 August 1896 – 15 March 1939) was a Spanish military officer. Julián Zugazagoitia Mendieta (5 February 1899, Bilbao – 9 November 1940, Madrid) was a Spanish journalist and politician. A member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, he was close to Indalecio Prieto and the editor of the ''El Socialista (newspaper), El Socialista'' in mid-1930s. In the first weeks of the Spanish Civil War he wrote against the ''Extrajudicial killing, paseos'' and denounced the anarchist and communist secret prisons (''checas''). In October 1936 he wrote in ''El Socialista'': "The life of an adversary who surrenders is unassailable; no combatant can dispose of that life. That is not how the rebels behave. It matters not. Andreu Nin i Pérez (; 4 February 1892 – 20 June 1937) was a Spanish politician, trade unionist and translator. He is mainly known for his role in various Spanish left-wing movements of the early 20th century and, later, for his role in the Spanish Civil War. He is also known for his work translating Russian classics such as '' Ana Karenina'', '' Crime and Punishment'' and some works by Anton Chekhov, from Russian into Catalan. A teacher and journalist, during his youth he was involved in various political movements until he joined the anarchist Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT). During his stay in Russia, he witnessed the Russian Revolution, which marked his conversion to Marxism. After his return to Spain, he later became one of the founders of the small but active Workers' Party of Marxist Unification (POUM).
