The placings were determined on points. If the points were equal, then the better goal average decided. The first two teams of each group were qualified for the semi-finals, while the third and fourth placed team was eliminated. Miklós Sárkány
Miklós Sárkány (15 August 1908 – 20 December 1998) was a Hungarian water polo player and Olympic gold medalist. Career He competed in the 1932 Summer Olympics and the 1936 Summer Olympics. He was born in Budapest. In 1932 he was part of the Hungarian team that won the gold medal, though he played only one match. Four years later he again won the gold medal with the Hungarian team, playing three matches at the historic 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, sponsored by the Nazi government. Sárkány was Jewish and was one of around thirteen Jewish athletes who won medals. Many Hungarian Jews shared their fellow citizens' passion for sport and viewed participation as a means of assimilation. In the 1930s, however, the antisemitism of the fascist, pro-Nazi Hungarian government pervaded some fields of sport. Helmuth Schwenn (27 January 1913 – 16 July 1983) was a German water polo player who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Career Schwenningen won an Olympic silver medal in water polo in the Olympics in 1936 in Berlin. He was part of the German team that finished second in water polo tournament. There were 16 nations that fielded teams. Germany's performance in the final round, 2-2 against Hungary, 4-1 against Belgium and 8-1 over France . Hungary and Germany both had five points but Hungary won due to better target view (10/2 = 5) against Germany (14/4 = 3.5).
