Antiphanes (comic Poet)
Antiphanes (Ancient Greek: Ἀντιφάνης; c. 408 to 334 BCE) is regarded as the most important writer of the Middle Attic comedy with the exception of Alexis. This cites: * Koch, ''Comicorum Atticorum Fragmenta'', ii. (1884) (fragments) * Clinton, ''Philological Museum'', i. (1832) * Meineke, ''Historia Critica Comicorum Graecorum'' (1839) He was apparently a foreigner (perhaps from Cius on the Propontis, Smyrna or Rhodes) and, by some accounts, was the child of slaves.Suda α 2745 He settled in Athens, where he began to write about 387. He was extremely prolific: more than 200 of the 365 (or 260) comedies attributed to him are known from the titles and considerable fragments preserved in Athenaeus. His plays chiefly deal with matters connected to mythological subjects, although others referenced particular professional and national persons or characters, while other plays focused on the intrigues of personal life. The ''Suda'' claims he died at the age of seventy-four after ...

Carystus
Carystus (; el, Κάρυστος, near modern Karystos) was a polis (city-state) on ancient Euboea. It was situated on the south coast of the island, at the foot of Mount Oche. It is mentioned by Homer in the Catalogue of Ships in the '' Iliad'', as controlled by the Abantes. The name also appears in the Linear B tablets as ''"ka-ru-to"'' (identified as ''Carystus''). Thucydides writes that the town was founded by Dryopes. Its name was derived from Carystus, the son of Cheiron. History Persian War In 490 BC during the Greco-Persian Wars a Persian Admiral named Datis laid siege to Carystus. Datis began the siege by destroying the crops around the city. His army of 80,000 soldiers with 200 triremes overwhelmed Carystus, causing it to surrender. Soon after the Battle of Salamis the Athenian fleet led by Themistocles extorted money from the city. Soon afterward Carystus refused to join the Delian League. The Athenians wanted Carystus to join the Delian League, ...

Antiphanes Of Berge
Antiphanes of Berge (or Antiphanes the Younger, grc, Ἀντιφάνης ὁ Βεργαῖος, 4th century BC) was a Greek writer of the book ''Ἄπιστα'' (Apista; "Unbelievable Things"), and was born in Berge, a town in ancient Macedonia near Amphipolis. In his Geographica, Straboi. p. 47, ii. pp. 102, 104; comp. Polyb. xx xiii. 12 refers to him as an impostor, because Antiphanes wished the reader to believe everything in his book, which actually contained falsehoods. Strabo also attacked the credibility of the writers Pytheas and Euhemerus in the same chapter. The Attic verb ''βεργαΐζειν'' (bergaizein) was used in reference to Antiphanes (who lived in Athens). ''βεργαΐζειν'' (bergaizein) refers to the telling of unbelievable stories. He also wrote a work on courtesans. He is not to be confused with Antiphanes of Argos, as was done by some ancient writers. Writings ''Ἄπιστα'' (Apista; "Unbelievable Things") was the primary work which led to A ...

Erechtheum
The Erechtheion (latinized as Erechtheum /ɪˈrɛkθiəm, ˌɛrɪkˈθiːəm/; Ancient Greek: Ἐρέχθειον, Greek: Ερέχθειο) or Temple of Athena Polias is an ancient Greek Ionic temple- telesterion on the north side of the Acropolis, Athens, which was primarily dedicated to the goddess Athena. The building, made to house the statue of Athena Polias, has in modern scholarship been called the Erechtheion (the sanctuary of Erechtheus or Poseidon) in the belief that Pausanias' description of the Erechtheion applies to this building. However, whether the Erechtheion referred to by Pausanias is indeed the Ionic temple or an entirely different building has become a point of contention in recent decades. In the official decrees the building is referred to as “... το͂ νεὸ το͂ ἐμ πόλει ἐν ο͂ι τὸ ἀρχαῖον ἄγαλμα” (the temple on the Acropolis within which is the ancient statue). In other instances it is referred to as the Temple ...

Grasshopper
Grasshoppers are a group of insects belonging to the suborder Caelifera. They are among what is possibly the most ancient living group of chewing herbivorous insects, dating back to the early Triassic around 250 million years ago. Grasshoppers are typically ground-dwelling insects with powerful hind legs which allow them to escape from threats by leaping vigorously. As hemimetabolous insects, they do not undergo complete metamorphosis; they hatch from an egg into a Nymph (biology), nymph or "hopper" which undergoes five moults, becoming more similar to the adult insect at each developmental stage. The grasshopper hears through the tympanal organ which can be found in the first segment of the abdomen attached to the thorax; while its sense of vision is in the compound eyes, the change in light intensity is perceived in the simple eyes (ocelli). At high population densities and under certain environmental conditions, some grasshopper species can change color and behavior and for ...
