Anthony Hayden
Sir Anthony Paul Hayden (born 24 June 1961), styled The Hon. Mr Justice Hayden, is a judge of the High Court of England and Wales and former barrister appointed to the High Court. He was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1987 and was appointed a Queen's Counsel (QC) in 2002. On 31 July 2013, he was appointed a judge of the High Court of Justice (Family Division) and invested with the customary knighthood in 2014. In 2018 he presided the Alfie Evans case over the legal challenge by the parents of Alfie Evans against Alder Hey Children's Hospital. Alder Hey Children's Hospital is a children's hospital and NHS foundation trust in West Derby, Liverpool, England. Archie Battersbee Case
Archie Battersbee, a British boy, was the subject of several court hearings between April and August 2022, regarding whether or not to withdraw his life support, after he was found unconscious and subsequently considered to have suffered brainstem death. The courts ruled in favour of Barts Health NHS Trust, and against his parents, and allowed his life support to be withdrawn. Incident On 7 April 2022, a 12-year-old boy, Archie Battersbee, from Southend, Essex, England, was found unconscious by his mother, Hollie Dance, with a dressing gown cord around his neck. Dance performed CPR, and called for an ambulance. The paramedics who attended found that Archie Battersbee had suffered a cardiac arrest and his Glasgow Coma Scale score was three, the lowest possible, indicating "no eye-opening, verbal or motor response". Alfie Evans Case
Alfie James Evans (9 May 2016 – 28 April 2018), was an infant boy from Liverpool with an undiagnosed neurodegenerative disorder, later revealed to be GABA-transaminase deficiency. The medical team and the child's parents disagreed about whether to maintain his life support or to withdraw it, resulting in a legal battle. Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust sought a declaration that continued mechanical ventilation was "unkind and inhumane", and not in the child’s best interests. Alfie's parents, Kate James and Thomas Evans, contested the application. The ventilatory support was removed on 23 April 2018 following a series of unsuccessful appeals from Alfie's family.
