Antarctic Four
"Antarctic Four" is the ninth television play episode of the first season of the Australian anthology television series ''Australian Playhouse''. "Antarctic Four" was written by Oriel Gray and directed by James Davern and originally aired on ABC on 13 June 1966. Australian TV drama was relatively rare at the time but there were several productions set in Antarctica in the 1960s, the others including '' Manhaul'' and ''She''. "Antarctic Four" was also performed as a stage play. Plot A group of six men from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition are stranded in an Antarctic outpost. Temporarily out of communication with their base, the men get into a nightmare situation brought on by a mysterious disease. ''Australian Playhouse'' was an Australian anthology TV series featuring the work of Australian writers. It ran for two series consisting of 40 episodes. Among the featured productions were works by Pat Flower who was the main writer having written 10 episodes, other writers included Tony Morphett, John Warwick, Barbara Vernon, Richard Lane, James Davern and David Sale Background Development In August 1965 Talbot Duckmanton of the ABC announced that the ABC would increase its production of local drama, including a show called ''Australian Playhouse''. "Manhaul" is a 1962 Australian television film. It aired 8 September 1962 as part of ''The General Motors Hour'', an occasional series which presented various one-off productions. It aired on ATN-7 in Sydney, QTQ-9 in Brisbane and GTV-9 in Melbourne , despite the two stations having severed their relationship with the formation of the Nine Network. Terry Gill (25 October 1939 – 25 February 2015) was an English Australian actor, theatre owner, producer, director and writer. A character actor, he carved a niche in Australian television playing police officers. He appeared in over 26 Australian television productions either as a regular or in guest roles. George Whaley (actor)
George Whaley (19 June 1934 – 6 August 2019) was an Australian actor, director and writer, known for his work across theatre and film. He was born in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia. He wrote and directed the mini-series ''The Harp in the South'' and it; sequel ''Poor Man's Orange'', as well as '' Dad and Dave: On Our Selection.'' He directed the film ''Dancing'', produced by David Elfick, which was shown at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 1980. James Davern
James Edmund Davern, OAM, is an Australian television director, writer, script editor and producer, and founder of production company JNP Productions. Professional career Davern was employed as a writer and script editor with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) television branch in the 1960s. He worked as a producer and director in drama and music programmes and was involved in establishing a script production line. In 1967, Davern was director and producer of the very first episode of '' Bellbird'', Australia's first successful television soap opera, set in a rural community. Davern moved to the Seven Network where he created the highly popular series ''A Country Practice'', one of the most popular drama series in Australian television history.
