Annie Huldah Bodden
Annie Huldah Bodden OBE (21 April 1908 – 15 June 1989) was a Caymanian civil servant, lawyer, and politician. She was the first woman to serve in the Legislative Assembly of the Cayman Islands, of which she was a member from 1961 to 1964 and from 1965 to 1984. Early life Bodden grew up in George Town, Grand Cayman. She left school at the age of 15 to work as a secretary to a local justice of the peace. She taught herself book-keeping, and in 1939 began working for the Cayman Islands Motor Boat Company (Cimboco); she eventually became the company's manager. In 1949, Bodden was appointed chief government auditor, the first woman to hold position. She resigned in 1959 and the following year qualified as an attorney-at-law, the first Caymanian woman to do so. Mary Evelyn Wood
Mary Evelyn Wood (1900 – 1978) was a politician and nurse in the Cayman Islands. She was the first woman elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Cayman Islands. The daughter of Charles and Julietta Wood, she started a small school in her father's home while she was in her early 20s. Wood trained as a nurse and worked in her community as a nurse, visiting new and expectant mothers and sick persons. She provided care to victims of a typhoid epidemic in the late 1930s. Wood was one of many women who signed a 1957 petition in support of women's suffrage; women gained the vote in 1959. In the same year, she joined the National Democratic Party, serving as treasurer. In 1962, she was elected to the legislative assembly for Bodden Town district. Caymanians are the status holders or born citizens of the Cayman Islands. As a British Overseas Territory, citizens of the Cayman Islands will hold British Overseas Territories Citizenship. There is no record of a native people to the Cayman Islands, such as groups like the Arawak or Carib people who were native to most of the Caribbean; therefore most Caymanians today are of mixed European and African descent, coming from early British settlers and enslaved people from Africa.
