Anne Quigley
Anne Quigley (born 1955 or 1956) is a British composer and Catholic liturgist who is best known for her vocal composition " There is a Longing" for which she wrote text and music. Quigley was born in Yorkshire. She was a member of the St. Thomas More Group of composers, which was associated with the parish of St. Thomas More in north London from 1969 to 1995. Quigley also served as a musician at the parish of Deptford in southeast London with another Yorkshire musician, Bernadette Farrell. "There is a longing" is a 1973 Christian hymn with text and music by Anne Quigley. It has appeared from 1992 in hymnals in English, and also in German from 1999, translated by Eugen Eckert to "Da wohnt ein Sehnen tief in uns". History The English composer and hymn writer Anne Quigley wrote the lyrics and the melody in 1973. It was published by Oregon Press Publications in 1992, and in several hymnals. Translations In 1999 Eugen Eckert translated the song into German under the title "Da wohnt ein Sehnen tief in uns". Bernadette Farrell
Bernadette Farrell (born 26 March 1957) is a British hymnographer and composer of Catholic liturgical music. Among her compositions are "Christ, Be Our Light,” "Restless Is The Heart," "God, Beyond All Names" and "O God, You Search Me." Biography Raised in West Yorkshire, Farrell studied at King's College London, and the Guildhall School of Music. Her first commission was from Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral for the National Pastoral Congress of 1980. She released five collaborative collections with the St Thomas More Group from 1985, and seven solo collections from 1990. Her work is published by Oregon Catholic Press. A founding member of the St Thomas More Group, CHIME and the Music in Worship Foundation, she served on the Roman Catholic Bishops Liturgical Commission for many years. Contemporary Catholic liturgical music encompasses a comprehensive variety of styles of music for Catholic liturgy that grew both before and after the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). The dominant style in English-speaking Canada and the United States began as Gregorian chant and folk hymns, superseded after the 1970s by a folk-based musical genre, generally acoustic and often slow in tempo, but that has evolved into a broad contemporary range of styles reflective of certain aspects of age, culture, and language.
