Annaglogh Lead Mines
Annaglogh was one of the larger lead mines in the Clontibret area of County Monaghan in Ireland. Annaglogh Mine is shown on the 1856 2nd edition OS map. History There is information on the mining activities in the area recorded in the ''Geological Survey Of Ireland Memoirs'' by FW Egan. Production at Annaglogh is listed in Mineral Statistics from 1852 to 1855, though the mine continued to be listed up to 1865. There were four shafts and an engine house, which are shown on the 1870 GSI Map. The remains of the mine's chimney and old spoil heaps are evident, however the residence of the mining agent was demolished in circa 2007 and (as of 2016) there was development of a new residence on the same site. The operation was run by Captain James Skimming (1817-1880), who was also the Mining Agent for the North Eastern Mining Company of Ireland which also encompassed nearby Lisdrumgormley, Coolartragh (Bond Mine), Lemgare Mines, and Hope Mines near Castleblayney. Clontibret
Clontibret () is a village and parish in County Monaghan, Ireland. The village population in the 2016 census was 172. Clontibret is also a parish in both Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland traditions. The territory of the parish also includes Annyalla and Doohamlet as well as smaller settlements such as Cremartin, Scotch Corner and Lisnagrieve. Location The village of Clontibret is situated close to the border with Northern Ireland, between the towns of Monaghan and Castleblayney, along the N2 National primary road which links Dublin and Derry. Parish Clontibret is a parish in the Diocese of Clogher. County Monaghan ( ; ga, Contae Mhuineacháin) is a county in Ireland. It is in the province of Ulster and is part of Border strategic planning area of the Northern and Western Region. Lisdrumgormley Lead Mines
The Lisdrumgormley Lead Mines are a deposit in Ireland that was mined for lead as early as the 1840s. The underground workings consisted of narrow, 1.5m-wide slopes above a northwest–southeast-trending level. It was the subject of further exploration during the mid-1950s when the original shaft was reopened to a depth of 21 meters. History Initially Lisdrumgormley Mine was part of the North Eastern Mining Company of Ireland. It was formed on Monday 6 April 1846 at The Angel Hotel in Liverpool, with Capt James Skimming (Annaglogh) as its Agent. The North Eastern Mining Company also encompassed nearby Annaglogh Mine, Coolartragh (BonMine Lemgare Mines and HopMinesnear Castleblayney. Lemgare Mass Rock
A number of Mass rocks and gardens were recorded in a survey carried out in 1957 in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Clogher in the Clontibret area of County Monaghan, Ireland. This survey was undertaken by Rev P O'Gallachair on behalf of the Clogher Diocese, a Roman Catholic diocese which spans the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The survey records three ' Mass rocks' and two 'Mass gardens'. During the time of the Penal Laws, Catholic religious observances were suppressed, and these remote sites were used as secret places of worship. Mass gardens The 1950s survey records a Mass garden at Lisglasson in Clontibret, and a Mass garden (or hut) at Doohamlet. The Mass garden at Lisglasson is situated close to the N2 and is accessible from the roadside. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. Galena, also called lead glance, is the natural mineral form of lead(II) sulfide (PbS). It is the most important ore of lead and an important source of silver. Galena is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfide minerals. It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system often showing octahedral forms.
