Ann Rosemary Sayer Order of the British Empire, MBE (16 October 1936 – 15 April 2020) was an English long-distance walker and rower. Born in Whitstable, Kent, Sayer attended London University, graduating with a degree in geology after which she worked for the oil company BP. Having taken up rowing at university, Sayer was selected for Great Britain at the Women's European Rowing Championships in 1960 European Rowing Championships, 1960, 1962 European Rowing Championships, 1962 and 1964 European Rowing Championships, 1964. In 1977, she became the first woman to qualify as a Centurion (racewalking), Centurion, walking 100 miles in under 24 hours. In 1979 she set the National 3 Peaks Challenge record by climbing the 3 highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland and running between each one in just 7 days. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding valuable service in a wide range of useful activities. It comprises five classes of awards across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom#Modern honours, knight if male or a dame (title), dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with the order, but are not members of it. The order was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V, who created the order to recognise 'such persons, male or female, as may have rendered or shall hereafter render important services to Our Empire'. Equal recognition was to be given for services rendered in the UK and overseas.
