Rutu Modan
Rutu Modan (; born 1966) is an Israeli illustrator and comic book artist. She is co-founder of the Israeli comics group Actus Tragicus and published the graphic novels ''Exit Wounds'' (2007) and '' The Property'' (2013). Biography Rutu Modan was born in Tel HaShomer, Israel, in 1966, and lived in the doctors' residences in Sheba Medical Center. Her father was Prof. Baruch Modan, a cancer researcher who served as director general of the Israeli Health Ministry in the 1980s. Her mother was Prof. Michaela Modan, an epidemiologist specializing in diabetes research. Her older sister is a doctor and her younger sister is Dana Modan, an actress and writer. The family moved to Afeka in north Tel Aviv when she was ten. After graduating with distinction from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, she edited the Hebrew edition of ''MAD'' magazine with Yirmi Pinkus. ''Exit Wounds'' is a graphic novel written and drawn by Rutu Modan about a search of a missing lover and a missing father in modern Tel Aviv, during the tense time of bombs attack in Israel. Plot summary The book follows a search of a young woman, Numi, for her old lover, who disappeared just before a suicide bomb that left an unidentified body. Numi calls Koby, a cab-driver and the missing person's son, to help her in the search. ''Exit Wounds'' challenges the idea of the corrosive influence of the search for an ending. Publication history The graphic novel, published in Hardcover on 2007 by Drawn & Quarterly, and in paperback in 2008. Didier Lefèvre
Didier Lefèvre (1957–2007) was a French photojournalist. His photos have appeared in many French magazines, including ''L'Express'' and '. He was best known for co-authoring with Emmanuel Guibert the book ''The Photographer (comics), The Photographer'', which told the story of his travels with a Médecins Sans Frontières mission during the Soviet–Afghan War. Lefèvre shot more than 4,000 photos on his 1986 MSF mission. He suffered from chronic furunculosis; he lost fourteen teeth after the MSF mission as a consequence of malnutrition, exhaustion, and stress from his experiences. Emmanuel Guibert
Emmanuel Guibert (born April 21, 1964, in Paris) is a French comics artist and writer. For his work, he has been awarded the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the Grand Prix de la ville d'Angoulême. Biography After a short period in art school, Guibert found work as an illustrator and storyboarder. He began ''Brune'', an album retracing the rise of Nazism in Germany in the 1930s. ''Brune'' was published in 1992, after seven years of work. In 1999, he began the series '' Ariol'', written by Marc Boutavant, which originated in the children's magazine ''J'aime lire''. ''Ariol'' has been collected into seventeen volumes, eleven of which have been translated into English by Papercutz. A French-Canadian series of animated shorts of the same title were also produced. ''The Photographer'' tells the true story of Didier Lefèvre, a French photojournalist, who accompanied a Médecins Sans Frontières mission during the height of the Soviet–Afghan War in 1986. The book interweaves Lefèvre's black-and-white photographs and Guibert's illustrations—combined with captions and word balloons—to create the narrative. First published by Dupuis in three volumes from 2003 through 2006, ''The Photographer'' sold 250,000 copies in France and won the Essentials of Angoulême award in 2007.
