Santa Cruz is a Region and Town in central Aruba, dominated by the Arikok National Park. The town is connected by Highway 7 from west to east and Highway 4 from north to south. The district has an area of 41.04 square kilometers and 12,870 inhabitants according to the 2010 census. Santa Cruz is divided into several neighborhoods, including, but not limited to, Boton, Bringamosa, Cas Ariba, Jamanota, Jan Flemming, Macuarima, San Fuego, Shete, Siribana, Urataka, Warawara, and Catashi. Macuarima Macuarima is a town in the Santa Cruz region. The town has been named after Macuarima, an Amerindian chief who lived on Aruba. Arikok National Park
Arikok National Park, covering in the northeastern region of Aruba, was officially established in 2000. Approximately 20% of Aruba's total land area is designated as a National Park, dedicated to safeguarding the park's biodiversity, geological formations and historical and cultural significance. Etymology The establishment of Cunucu Arikok resulted from the development of Arikok National Park. This region was once a small plantation owned by Arie Kok, featuring an adobe house ('' cas di torto''). Gilberto François "Betico" Croes (; 25 January 1938 – 26 November 1986) was an Aruban political activist who was a proponent for Aruba's separation from the Netherlands Antilles. Laura Simona Wernet-Paskel (February 18, 1911 – September 8, 1962) was an Aruban teacher, writer, and politician. She was the first female political candidate in Aruba, running for office three times beginning in 1949. Early life and education Laura Simona Paskel was born in Santa Cruz, Aruba, in 1911. She was the oldest of three children in a Catholic farming family. On the advice of the Dominican nuns who oversaw Catholic education in Aruba, she went by boat to the Netherlands at age 15 to study at a school in Reuver. When Paskel, along with Magdalena de Cuba, passed the teacher's exam in 1931, the two became the first Aruban schoolteachers to graduate in the Netherlands.
