Angels Of War
''Angels of War'' is a 1982 Australian documentary film, created by Andrew Pike, Hank Nelson and Gavan Daws, about the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels in Papua New Guinea in World War 2. Production ''Angels of War'' cost $80,000 with funding provided by the Australian National University and the Australian War Memorial. Reception Neil Jillet of ''the Age'' says in his capsule review that it "is an interesting compilation of new (color) and archival (black and white) film, and a reminder of how soon we forget those who helped Australia to victory." In ''the Canberra Times'' Philip Castle finishes "This excellent film, being shown appropriately around Anzac Day, might in a significant way record the service of the Fuzz-Wuzzy Angels, lest we forget." Andrew Pike
Andrew Franklin Pike is an Australian film historian, film distributor and exhibitor, and documentary producer and director. Pike formed Ronin Films, an Australian film distribution company, with his first wife, Merrilyn Fitzpatrick, in 1974, and remains managing director of the company. He has produced and directed many documentaries since 1982, and co-authored several books, notably ''Australian Film 1900-1977'' (1998). Pike has been honoured with numerous awards, including a plaque on the ACT Honour Walk in Canberra City; Medal Order of Australia; and an honorary doctorate from the University of Canberra. Gavan Daws
Gavan Daws is an American writer, historian and filmmaker residing in Honolulu, Hawaii. He writes about Hawaii, the Pacific, and Asia. He is a retired professor of history at University of Hawaii at Manoa. Daws is originally from Australia and got his B.A. in English and History from the University of Melbourne. He has a Ph.D. in Pacific History from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His best-known works are ''Shoal of Time: A History of the Hawaiian Islands'', in print since 1968; ''Holy Man: Father Damien of Molokai'', the biography of a nineteenth-century missionary priest to Hawaii who served leprosy sufferers, and who has recently been canonized; and ''Prisoners of the Japanese: POWs of World War II in the Pacific.'' John Waiko
John Dademo Waiko (8 August 1945 – 17 November 2024) was a Papua New Guinean historian, anthropologist, playwright and politician. Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels
"Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels" was the name given by Australian soldiers to Papua New Guinean war carriers who, during World War II, were recruited or forced into service to bring supplies up to the front and carry injured Australian troops down the Kokoda trail during the Kokoda Campaign. History "Fuzzy-Wuzzy" was originally used by British soldiers in the 19th century as a name for Hadendoa warriors on the Red Sea coast of the Sudan, and referred to their elaborate butter-matted hairstyles. In 1942, during the Pacific invasion, the Japanese had built up a force of 13,500 in the Gona region of Papua with the intention of invading Port Moresby. The key to the offensive was an overland trail across the Owen Stanley Ranges. The 24th Australian Film Institute Awards (generally known as the AFI Awards) were held at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney on 27 October 1982. Presented by the Australian Film Institute (AFI), the awards celebrated the best in Australian feature film, documentary and short film productions of 1982.
